DIR-645 - Wake On Lan over the internet not working properly
« on: August 14, 2013, 11:21:12 AM »

Hello,

So I've attempted quite alot of different things, to get WOL to work. I first followed this guide, which says to forward port 9 in the router:

http://windows7-issues.blogspot.dk/2011/03/wake-on-lan-wol-for-windows-7-made-easy.html

When following this guide, I am able to get WOL to work over the LAN. If I send the magic package form another computer on the LAN, it is received and the PC is also able to start up. However it does not work over the internet.

I have also tried this guide, which has another approach with reserving an IP address for the computer to wake, and not doing a port forward, but instead set up a virtual server forward:

ftp://ftp.dlink.de/dir/dir-645/documentation/DIR-645_howto_de_Wake-on-LAN.pdf

This however, does not work either over the internet, only over the LAN.

A third guide says to forward both port 7 and 9:

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DIR-645/Wake_on_LAN.htm

Does not work either.

In one of the guides, it says to use the broadcast IP address as the IP address to forward the magic package to. In the DIR-645 it is not possible to set this address. It says "The input hostid is out of the boundary". Google'ing this shows multiple people having this problem. A way to get past it is to run a Javascript on the setup page. This does run, but the router immidiately sets the IP back to what is was before. I think the "bug" has been fixed?

Now, I know the problem is with the magic package not being able to get to my computer from the outside since it it received if sent from within the LAN.

I have tried upgrading the firmware to 1.04(newest), and downgrading to oldest(1.01) to see if that made a difference. No luck.

So! I've tried nearly everything, but I simply can't get WOL to work. Help!

Thanks in advance, Jacob.

It doesn't help you at all, but for what it's worth I have been down the paths as you, and so far have not been successful either with this device.  Such a shame that D-Link dropped the ball on this...

I believe that WOL just may not be supported at all on this model router. There is a listing of supported routers in the FAQ Library under the WOL sticky I think. It maybe out of date.

You should phone contact D-Link support and ask them which routers are supporting WOL.

Well, if that’s the case, never have I been so disappointed in a product. Not to sound like a ****** or anything, but it has provided nothing but problems. Of all the Wi-Fi networks in my building, it has the worst connection, even though it's in the room next to my computer, and the other Wi-Fi networks are in other apartments. Besides that, it has(was fixed in 1.04 I think) a bug that renewed your IP every 45 minutes, which caused you to be thrown off the internet. And now you tell me it doesn't support WOL, a 17 year-old technology supported in most cheap routers. This is an expensive router, yet it performs worse than the ones that cost 1/3 the price. I'm extremely disappointed. I better be able to get my money back from this piece of untested, overpriced, buggy piece of s***. The developer team that was responsible for this model should be ashamed.

So did you phone contact D-Link support and ask them about this?

This router works every well for me and have enjoyed it immensely since buying it. Been a great gaming router too.

Have you set up reserved IP addresses on the router for ALL devices? This avoids any DHCP renewal processed and ensures each devices gets it own address when connected. Works well for me and others.

If your having wifi problems and your in a apt complex with many other 2.4Ghz WiFi in the area, then your probably getting into a WiFi congestion condition that most any router on 2.4Ghz will have.
Please review this: Managing Signal Congestion
You may need to upgrade to a 5Ghz router or add on a 5Ghz AP to the 645 to help you get away from the 2.4Ghz congestion. Granted some devices can't be upgraded like some cell phones and pads, however PCs and Laptops can be.

17 year old WOL and probably for most SOHO routers, not used that much any more. These are generally home routers and generally most home users are not using WOL or concerned about it. There is only a few niche users out there that seem to be in need of this 17 year old technology.

I presume that if you need the use of WOL, then you need to do more research and find the proper supporting router that does. It's up to users to do there home work and ask questions before buying. There are different models and with different features. Same thing goes for anything else, like cars, you don't blame the car mfr cuz you didn't get a feature you needed after you bought the car right?

It seems that you need to get your other problems with the router resolved first before doing anything else.
I would follow this and see if you can get some of your problems cleared up along with the WiFi:
Router Troubleshooting Suggestions and Tips

Please make a new post as this on has gone into the wrong direction and doesn't provide any useful information and borders on being in violation of forum policy with your crude comments.

If your not willing to let us help you then you'll need to either phone contact D-Link support or find a different solution.

Good Luck.
