Configuring Repeater for Hidden Wifi
« on: August 05, 2013, 05:57:02 PM »

Hi! Just bought myself the DIR-505 for use in my double storey house. I've some problem trying to use the DIR-505 as a repeater for my present NETGEAR wifi modem router. At present my NETGEAR wifi SSID is set to hidden for obvious purposes.

My mode selector is already on 'Repeater'.

Is there a way to get the DIR-505 to 'see' a hidden wifi network during setup? Site survey only returns wifi networks that are visible.

I'm also getting confused at the setup menu for repeater. Is the SSID (Wireless Network Name) referring to my NETGEAR wifi SSID or the DIR-505 SSID broadcast wifi name? I do not want the DIR-505 to have the same SSID as my NETGEAR SSID so that I can tell them apart.

Looking for some favourable replies. Thanks

Do the manual configuration and enter the SSID name. But if you don't want it to have the same name, then I recommend hotspot mode instead - I am not sure "repeater" will do that. The disadvantage is that the 505 will be on a separate subnet so if you need to talk to other devices on your network that won't work. Why is it important to use a different SSID in this case?

FWIW, hidden SSID doesn't really buy you anything - it's a very minor speed bump for anyone serious about finding local networks.

Thanks for the suggestion, holmes4. And thanks also for the info on the futility of hiding the SSID (I never knew that!).

I did accidently used the same SSID on the 505 as with my NETGEAR router modem. But it caused a problem when my laptop linked onto the 505 (with no internet access) and not my NETGEAR router modem (which has internet access). It seems the 505 just acts like another wifi network at that instance.

But, since its futile to hide my SSID, then I'll try back the original instructions as per the User Manual. Will keep you updated.

Thanks

I just got a DIR-505 too and had some trouble connecting it to my hidden network as well. I installed the latest firmware (at this time it's 1.06 I think: http://support.dlink.ca/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-505). To set up after rebooting etc., I chose to cancel the initial setup wizard, and then manually set up wi-fi, where I was able to enter my hidden SSID.
