Hi! I tried some custom firmwares on my D-link DIR-615 v.E4. I flashed with DD-WRT (dd-wrt.com), OpenWRT (openwrt.org) and Gargoyle firmware (A GUI modified version of OpenWRT, gargoyle-router.com). In my opinion, Gargoyle is the best in terms of usability and control/limit bandwidth of all network users. And OpenWRT is the most feature-rich firmware. D-link's default firmware is kinda worthless compared to these three firmwares. DD-WRT is also good, but there's no bandwidth controller and some LEDs don't work.

If you guys want to try these firmwares, I'd like to suggest, begin with Gargoyle. Please note, installing custom firmware will void D-link's warranty.

Steps to install Gargoyle:

1. Make sure hardware version is E4 of your DIR-615 router, otherwise don't flash (download model specific flash file in such case).
2. Use Firefox browser (Current version: 23.0.1),
3. Use ethernet cable, never try to flash over wifi,
4. Download Gargoyle firmware from here: http://www.gargoyle-router.com/downloads/images/ar71xx/gargoyle_1.5.10-ar71xx-generic-dir-615-e4-squashfs-factory.bin
5. Disconnect power cable of your router and wait for 20 seconds,
6. Now press and hold reset button, then connect power cable, hold reset button until power led starts blinking,
7. Set your computer's IP to 192.168.0.2,
8. Open firefox and type 192.168.0.1 to get router's interface,
9. Click "Browse" and locate the firmware file you downloaded, then press "send" button,
10. Wait for around 5 minutes to completely flash your router. Don't disconnect power while flashing, otherwise you'll brick your router, that means it'll become permanently unusable.
11. Now set your computer's IP to automatic (DHCP).
12. In firefox, type 192.168.1.1 to get Gargoyle interface, now configure your router, it's easy.

Way to revert back to D-link's default stock firmware:
1. Download D-link's default firmware from D-link' site, for your router.
2. Follow steps 5 to 10, with the firmware file you downloaded.

If you want some more features, try OpenWRT firmware. You'll be amazed by seeing what you can do with this firmware and stability you'll get. Download this file to flash OpenWRT (Only for Hardware version E4): http://downloads.openwrt.org/attitude_adjustment/12.09/ar71xx/generic/openwrt-ar71xx-generic-dir-615-e4-squashfs-factory.bin
