NAS keeps Rebooting?
« on: August 27, 2013, 05:31:11 AM »

Any help greatly appreciated:

My NAS has been working fine - I use it to store my media for sharing around several devices. Then a couple of days ago it stopped playing files....

After a few minutes streaming a video (anything between 1 minute and 10), the picture starts to stutter then it seems to reboot. I can't see anything in the log (is there more than one log?). Have tried playing media from both of the hard disks - same problem.

I've tried powering down for a while - same problem still occurs.

I've also noticed that when I go to the ShareCentre webpage - it logs me on, but doesn't display the full screen and none of the buttons work. This is only in Internet Explorer - it works fine in Chrome.

Any ideas please?

Would a factory reset help - and would it affect the disks? Anything else to try?

Restoring the DNS-320 to the factory default settings will delete all user settings (e.g. passwords, shares, network settings, etc.), but should not impact existing HDD configurations or stored data.  Please see the following sticky posts from our FAQ board along with the recommended procedure:

As a precaution, you should always maintain a backup of all critical data prior to performing any major change to your ShareCenter configuration.

Ok: I've done a factory reset and restored the config file. I still get the same problem.  :(

Any ideas please?

Hi,
The only thing I can think of is to try reinstalling the same firmware.

Thought of one other little thing.  Don't use the config file to restore settings, sometimes this has caused problems.  Take the time to manually restore everything.

By the sounds of your description you have setup the nas with two separate disks both of which appear to be giving problems all of a sudden.

Have you changed anything on your network, updated router, changed wireless setup, added more devices etc.?

You say something 'appears to reboot', is this in fact the nas actually rebooting i.e. being off the network for a couple of minutes while the reboot takes place, or is it something else like the video restarting?

Have you run the S.M.A.R.T test (management ->disk management -> s.m.a.r.t test) and if so what were the results?

Looking at those things should give some indication of where the problem lies.

Many thanks Ivan - SMART test is something I wasn't aware of.

It now appears to be sorted.

I updated the Fireware 2.02 -> 2.03. No change.

I did a factory reset - but this time didn't restore the config file, and now it seems to be fine!

I've played about 3 hours of videos - without a problem (whereas before, 10 minutes was the maximum without problems starting).

Thanks to all who've helped - really appreciated!

As cable2 pointed out, it's possible that restoring the legacy Configuration Settings file was the culprit. If improper or corrupt data was stored in the that file, then restoring would simply migrate the issues over, perpetuating the problem. I've seen this as the root cause for problems (rarely, but a few times nonetheless) on the D-Link router series.
