My DNS-345 is dead :/
« on: August 21, 2013, 12:29:25 PM »

After a failed update to firmware v1.02b04 my Nas wont start. The update hang at 90% and I had to reboot the unit (waited for a night to update to finish).

Now when pressing the power button nothing happens, the led display is black and no lights next to the lan-sockets. When unplugging power-cord and putting it back again the fans speeds up for 3sec (still black display/lan), then nothing happens.

Have tried with hard reset for 15sec, still nothing.

My worst fear is that my to jbod partions will be lost (2 set of 2*4tb Seagate)

I've opened a support ticket with dlink but still no answer.
Can I restore my partitions after eventually service?

Did you try performing a factory reset? This procedure will restore the DNS-345 to the factory default settings, removing all user settings/shares/etc, but should not impact existing HDD configurations or data.

While the DNS-345 is powered up, press and hold the reset button on the rear of the unit for > 9 seconds.

FYI - you may want to remove your JBOD HDDs to avoid any potential data loss.  Once the unit is restored, and assuming the JBOD was not damaged, you can drop the HDDs back in. This approach will afford you the opportunity to be more brazen in your recovery attempts without worrying about your data.

Judging by the symptoms mentioned, no LEDs lit, the fan powers up for a very short time after the power supply has been disconnected and then re connected, I would suspect the power supply is not supplying the voltage and current it should.

Unfortunately, there is no easy way to test the supplied voltage under load without using a special adapter or taking the unit apart.

It should be possible to do a quick test if another power supply with the same voltage is available (19v DC) even if it does not supply the same current (4.75A) - if less current just remove the drives.  Since many notebook computers (Acer Aspire series for example) use this power supply it should be possible to borrow one for testing.

If the DNS-345 does not power up using a known working power supply then it should be returned as defective.

ShareCenter - Restoring Factory Default Settings

The unit wont power up, so I cant do a factory reset. I've have tried several times. The only time the uniit is near alive is when reconnecting the power-cord, then the fans speeds up for 3seconds (black led).

I've just tried connecting the power-supply from my laptop (Samsung) same voltage. The contact doesn't fit all the way into the nas socket, but nearly. When plugin in I get the same response from Nas (fan speeds up 3sec and everything black)

OK, we now know your power supply is not the problem, we also know that the unit is trying to boot up (the fan starts) but can't get very far.

I am still concerned that the power LED doesn't light as it should when the fan starts.  This would indicate some sort of fault on the maim board rather than some problem caused by a bad firmware update.

This is now at the stage where you need to get the unit to a service technician that knows something about D-Link NAS boxes unless you have training in electronics repair.  It could be something as simple as a dry solder joint that decided to cause problems - which could explain your firmware update failure, through to the CPU having a fault.

Sorry I can't be of more help but if the unit won't boot there is not much you can do on your own.

So the above is redundant but I will leave it there for future reference.

To answer your latest question.  In theory yes - but you should have a backup if only because of Murphy's Law.

As Ivan pointed out, in theory you should be able to restore your HDDs. Once you get your new unit, you should be able to drop in the new drives and the DNS-345 should detect the JBOD volume. This is predicated on the JBOD not being damaged/corrupted as a result from whatever happened to your defective DNS-345.

If the replacement volume does not detect your HDDs and you do not have a backup, then there is a potential (not guaranteed) recovery option: DNS-345 - Data Recovery (Windows PCs)
