It's my understanding we can use a NAS to to automatically store recorded video recorded with the motion detection feature of the DCS-5020L, I have a Western Digital My Book Live, but can't figure how to do this, any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Here's a procedure for pushing video/images from the DCS-5020L to your NAS:

• Setup your NAS as an FTP server
• Log into the web UI and navigate to SETUP > FTP
  
• Under FTP SERVER, enter the NAS FTP path and credentials
  
• Under TIME SCHEDULE, select the criteria for saving video and/or images to the NAS

the recording for this camera is it auto? or does it record only when motion is detected?

im planning to get a ip camera with pan/tilt control and does auto recording to my dns320. and i think this unit comes close.

any advice?

I strongly encourage you to download the DCS-5020L manual so you can read about the functionality (mydlink.com/support). In short, you can enable emailing or FTP of images/video based on:  (1) always; (2) set schedule; or (3) motion detection events.  You can also specify the video file size and number of seconds of recording, etc.  Again, download the manual to learn more about specific functionality.

Where do we find the NAS FTP path?

The path is defined on the storage device containing the FTP server that you would have needed to configure ahead of time.

So you know, the NAS is a D-Link DNS-320L, using a DCS-5020L cam, they're advertised as easy to setup even for the novice user, so in other words, yes I have configured Storage Device containing the FTP Server, but as to your "The path is defined on the storage device", you lost me there. If you could put it in dumb guy terms for me and directly spell it out, I'd appreciate it.

Looks good.
Just wondering, I've configured two other DCS-5020L's the same way setting up an account for each one but no luck on them working, they are all setup on the same port, do the ports need to be different for each cam? That's all I can think of at the moment.

You can try placing the working network camera(s) offline and see if the others start working. Are you sure the permissions are correct on the user accounts?
