I'm using a QNAP TS-409 as my web file server and have a static IP address (within my router address range, for ex: 192.168.0.20).  I have forwarded port 80 of the webserver's IP address to the DIR-655, but I still can't see my web server from the WAN.  I can see it fine via the LAN on all my LAN computers using: http://192.168.0.20:80, but not using my router's IP address as shown in the DIR-655's "Device Information" page. 

Any ideas what could be wrong?  I've read dozens of online guides on this and nothing seems to help...

Looks like you did not open up your modem (internet gateway)....

I can get out to the internet just fine, so I'm not sure that's the problem...

I order to access ports on your router from the outside, the modem also needs those ports opened. Default setting in modems is all LAN to WAN traffic allowed, but the firewall on the modem will keep traffic from the outside (WAN) out that is not 'requested' from the inside to come in.  And trying to cconnect to a server on the inside (via port 80) without a request from the inside is blocked by default. So you need to set a rule inside the modem to let port 80 (http web server) traffic through to the LAN.

Perhaps because it's a PPoE/ATM Gateway When I opened the necessary ports it just took me to the Siemens gateway setup page, if I tell it to forward to the Dlink, it takes me to the Dlink setup page, or what would be the gateway setup page. The only way I could get it to work was to set the Dlink to connect using PPoE, bypassing the Siemens all together.

Then that is the correct way. You won't miss out on the Siemens, the DIR does all the things the Siemanes did.

Thanks for the help, is there a setting on the modem itself (Motorola SB5101) to enable this (I can only find a status page through http://192.168.100.1/RgStatus.asp) or is this done through the router configuration panels?

This is set on the Motorola. But some ISP's block te setup (cable mostly)... I guess you best contact your ISP to find out how to do so.

Use 8080 or a different port Don't use 80. On my File Server using Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise Server Edition SP2 I also run XServer gives you FTP Server as well as Web Server (LAN or WAN) Easy to use and it's free. Another free one is KF Web Server and HFS gives more to access your files anywhere around the world.
