DSR-500N and problem watching YouTube on iPad
« on: July 09, 2013, 10:49:58 PM »

Hi,

I have a strange problem. In my home I have a DSR-500N connected to the Internet via an ADSL-modem.

Attached via CAT-6 cables I have two wireless access points.

When I connect my iPad to my DSR-500 wirelessly the ordinary surfing etc workds fine, BUT when I try to watch YouTube videos I cannot... However, if I connect my iPad to either of the other two accesspoints, I have no problems at all watching YouTube videos!

There is no problem watching Netflix movies when connected with the DSR-500N with my iPad!!!

Where should I start problem shooting this phenomenom?

Thanks!

Link>Welcome!
  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • Any cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default.

Thanks FurryNutz for keeping an eye on this! I have been really swamped with work lately, but I have managed to check the MTU-values.

When using the ping command ”ping www.dn.se –f –l 1472 the response was 4 packets sent and 4 packets received, 0 packets lost.
When going up to 1474, I received the response that 4 packets was sent but 4 packets lost. Furthermore is said that “Packets need to be fragmented by DF set”
And my isp says it is 1500.

Will be continued....

I have now located some of the things you listed:

Hardware version: H/W Ver: A1
Firmware version: 1.06B11_WW
Region: Sweden - Europe
ISP Service: ADSL
ISP Modem Mfr. and model: Inteno – Xavi -X5258-P2
MTU requirements:
When using the ping command ”ping www.dn.se –f –l 1472 the response was 4 packets sent and 4 packets received, 0 packets lost.
When going up to 1474, I received the response that 4 packets was sent but 4 packets lost. Furthermore is said that “Packets need to be fragmented by DF set”
And my isp says it is 1500.
What wireless modes are you using? N
Channel Width: 20/40Mhz.
Security mode: WPA2 (The other possible settings are: Open, WEP, WPA and WPA+WPA 2)
Encryption: TKIP+CCMP (the only other option is: CCMP) The recommended Wi-Fi setting for all iOS devices is WPA2 Personal (AES). This option doesn’t seem to be available on my DSR-500N router (if not CCMP = AES)

Other settings on this router include “WMM” with a lot of options under IP TOS/DiffServ Mapping (but I have no clue of what these settings are! All available options is set to default (other options are: “Background, Best Effort, Video and Voice” for all the numbers listed (0 – 63)
There is also an "WDS Configuration"-option.
•Cordless house phones: Siemens Gigaset

About the other seetings, I do not know if I have and can change these: Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless...

Still, how come that I can connect my iPad to the OTHER accesspoints on the same LAN (which are wired to the same DSR-500N router) and view YouTube without any problem?

And the iPad is the only device that exhibits this with the 500N? I presume other devices work ok?

We have three iPad and they all have the same problem. iPhones the same problem. That is, when connecting the iOS devices to the DSR-500N built in access point, the YouTube video will not play. If I disconnect and connect to the two other access points, the YouTube video starts playing instantly (even if the signal strength is very low)

I would presume that there is a problem between the DSR and the iPads. I think you need to phone contact D-Link support and has for level 2 or higher and see if they can help you resolve this. If the iPads are working on other APs and not the DSR WiFi, then I think there is a problem with the DSR.

Keep us posted.

  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?

What happens if you temporarily turn off WiFi security and test the iPads, do they connect and get any Internet?
