WoL (Wake on Lan) Issues with DIR-625
« on: October 30, 2008, 01:11:50 PM »

I'm interested in getting Wake on Lan functionality going for my main workstation at home.  It's a freaking power hog if I leave it on all the time, and so my thoughts were to have it go to sleep after a period of inactivity, and use a WOL application or WOL over the internet to wake it if I need to access something from it remotely.

I've had success in getting it to work with this router... BUT it only seems to work for the first few minutes after the machine goes to sleep.  It's as though the router finally drops the connection or clears it's ARP cache (forgets about the machine) and won't send WOL packets anymore.

It works successfully if I do this:

-Put vista machine to sleep.
-Immediately, use WOL app on my iPhone to send magic packet.
-Computer wakes up no problem..

It doesn't work if I do this:

-Put vista machine to sleep.
-Wait 5 minutes, then try to send WOL packet.
-Computer stays sleeping forever... (or until I physically bat the mouse.. )

I found the manual for the DIR-625 rev C and it says there should be a checkbox under "Advanced, Firewall Settings, Application Level Gateway" for Wake-On-Lan... BUT the actual page is missing a number of options that the manual says it should have.

What gives d-link?  Why does your most recent manual show me options that are missing in the actual firmware?

I checked out the emulators for the DIR-625 and found that the REV A has the options... and the REV C doesn't.  Did d-link remove some of the ALG options on purpose, or was it a mistake?

If anyone has any suggestions... I'm all ears!  er... eyes...

Thanks

Do you have the latest firmware (3.06) for your Rev_C Router??

I'm running the DIR-615 RevB and have the same issue.  I also found the manual for the DIR-615 rev B and it says there should be a checkbox under "Advanced, Firewall Settings, Application Level Gateway" for Wake-On-Lan,  and it too, is missing options that the manual says it should have.

I have only been able to get magic packets to wake up a PC on the local network, they will not forward through the router when I'm on the internet.

Has anyone got a workaround?

I've recently bought a DIR-615 (Hardware Version: C1 - Firmware Version: 3.01) and I have the exact same problem as newalloy.
WOL only works during the first few minutes after the computer is shut down.  :(

This happens because DIR-615 ages out its ARP cache. This means that when it receives a WOL packet from the WAN, it may have "forgotten" the IP address associated with the MAC address in the WOL packet. The DIR-615 also does not allow creating a port forwarding rule to the LAN broadcast address (192.168.0.255).

Has anyone found a workaround ?

I hope D-Link fix this with some new firmware.  :-\
