static ip address via dhcp reservation settings - how?
« on: June 11, 2009, 05:57:18 PM »

hi,

i need to set up my 825 to provide a static ip address to my xbox via mac address. i had this configured correctly on my old linksys box with some help from rdoloak, but i can't figure out how to do this on the 825 for the life of me.

i have a few quirks in my network to consider before answering.

1. the 825 is not my primary dhcp server, nor can it be. i cannot turn on the dhcp function on the 825 or it crashes the rest of my network.
2. i want to assign 3 addresses only
 - 192.168.1.100 - xbox
 - 192.168.1.110 - ps3
 - 192.168.1.120 - denon receiver
3. i have a linksys bridge that all 3 devices are connected into that needs to talk to the 825

any assistance is appreciated.

thnx
d

This is not possible with these addresses.
If you choose i.e. 192.168.0.100-102 you could enable the DHCP server and limit the range of possible addresses to these three.
Then you are able to assign them via static DHCP to the appropriate MACs.
You would have to disable these addresses in your primary DHCP then.

But this will only work if the DIR-825 is your internet gateway as it assigns its own address as Gateway for the devices. Otherwise they would only have internal connection.

let me make sure i understand what you are saying.

first, i have to enable the dlink dhcp server to make any of this work.

second, i change the subnet on this segment to 192.168.0.x, modify the subnet mask to 255.255.0.0, and provide the 3 addresses you suggest below of 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.3.

but, neither of these will work if i don't use this as the internet gateway (aka router) on my network, which in my case is not possible due to the location of the unit.

so net net is that i'm hosed?

Yes, it is not possible to use the DHCP if the DIR is not the internet gateway.

Why can't you just use your other DHCP server to assign addresses to these devices?

drick,

It's been a while since we've had that discussion.  By default the DIR-825 uses a router IP address of 192.168.0.1 however you can changed that to what ever you'd like (e.g. 192.168.1.1)

What DHCP IP address range is the Juniper using?  What IP address is assigned to the 825 and is it static or dynamic?  What DHCP IP address range are you assigning to the 825 (e.g. 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.120).  Do you have any insight into the reason why the 825 is crashing the rest of your network when DHCP is turned on?  My assumption is that you didn't experience this issue with the Linksys WRT-600N or am I mistaken?

What DHCP IP address range is the Juniper using?
192.168.1.30 - 192.168.1.45

What IP address is assigned to the 825 and is it static or dynamic?
192.168.1.4 / static

What DHCP IP address range are you assigning to the 825 (e.g. 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.120).
none right now as i was told it won't work, ideally it would be the those you listed

Do you have any insight into the reason why the 825 is crashing the rest of your network when DHCP is turned on?  My assumption is that you didn't experience this issue with the Linksys WRT-600N or am I mistaken?

it is due to the fact that the conflicting DHCP servers step on each other as close as i can figure. this was not happening on the WRT600n, but i know why. on the linksys, you could just turn on the static dhcp entries without turning on DHCP.

rdoloak,

answers inline above, thanks for the help
