Can't open port 3389 for Remote Desktop
« on: December 15, 2013, 09:34:00 PM »

DIR 655, Hardware Revision B1, firmware is current. Located in Pakistan.

The router is connected to a DSL Modem ZTE 831 series (PPPoE mode). I also have another router (DIR 618) connected to the DIR 655. I am using the DIR-618 as an access point.

The computer that I want to access using Remote Desktop is a Home Server. It is wired to the DIR 655, since I want to be able to use Wake on LAN to remotely turn the machine on and off as required. I can access it using Remote Desktop locally, but I can't seem to get port forwarding to work so I can access the machine remotely. The home server is on a static ip. I also set up a dynamic DNS account and updated router with the account settings.

But I am unable to get port forwarding to work. I made the settings in port forwarding menu of the DIR 655 to open port 3389 for both TCP and UDP access. Windows firewall is configured to allow access to Remote Desktop. But when I check the port, it shows it as closed. Tried checking with the firewall disabled, but the result is the same.

Can someone please help me fix this. Thanks.

Link>Welcome!

  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
Example of a D-Link router configured for PPPoE with ISP Modem bridged: PPPoE Configuration on Router
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Firmware is 2.05

Link speeds
Up speed 4MB/s
Down speed 1MB/s
ISP MTU is 1492

My other router is connected to the DIR 655 and configured as an access point.

It was easy to configure the modem in bridge mode. But the router had trouble connecting to the Internet.
After several frustrating attempts, I finally managed to get it working by doing a factory reset on the DIR 655. The modem is now configured in bridge mode, I also turned off DHCP and NAT on the modem.

But port forwarding is still not working. First I tried setting up port forwarding, it didn't work. Then I tried giving Remote Desktop access using virtual server, but still couldn't get port 3389 to open :(

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.

It's working now :)

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

Just one more thing... my firmware is 2.05 but I believe the most current firmware is 2.11. But when I try to check for firmware updates from the router, it says that my firmware is up-to-date. Should I try to manually flash the 2.11 firmware or should I just leave it up to the router to check for the most current firmware?

If it works, don't fix it!!!  ::)

If you really want to update, Please follow this:
FW Update Process

Ya, sometimes the update servers are not kept up to date and thus don't report what really is up to date. And to be safe, always use the FW update process. I have seen some router updates using the update server go bad. So manually update as a good rule. Always check the main site or here in the forums. I try to keep up dates posted.

Enjoy.  ;)
