I just got my Dir-657 Media Router and seems to be working fine, the only issue i find is that it seams that the Hard Drive i have connected to usb wont go to stand by mode ever. I left it hooked for a few hours without accesing it and it never went to sleep. I'm afraid that this will ruin/wear off my disc really fast.

Is there a way to configure this? Will it do it itself out of the box, but it was just indexing for the first time?

Please halp, ive been looking for info on this all over, but havent been able to find anything.

What Mfr and model and size is this USB drive?
Most drives last a very long time regardless of being spun down or in constant spin. Even in PCs drives last years...

The hardware Version is A1, Firmware i just updated to 1.01, Im in Lima, Peru, but i bought it in the US.

The HDD is a Usb 3.0 2TB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk, p/n 9zq2p5-500.

I want to know if its possible that the hdd goes to stand by mode when its not accessed for a while.

You'll need to contact the Mfr of the USB drive to ask them this question.

Since the drive size is so large and if you have filled it up with data, it could take the router a long period of time to catalog or scan the drive. Remember, each time you add something to the drive or remove data, the router will need to rescan the entire drive.

Sleeping depends on how the Mfr set that up and if there isn't any queries from the router to the HDD, I would presume the drive would sleep.

This drive size may not be supported on this model router.

Have your HDDs gone to stand by mode? Mine isn't really full. Its kinda scary tbh what you tell me about scanning the whole thing every time u write to it.

I really don't recall, I know one that I watched it it stopped accessing the drive after the scan. I didn't leave it connected long enough to check sleep mode on the drive.

Its the nature of routers, since they don't cache all the information or only cache was was scanned, they are not set up to record any live updates so a scan has to be performed when the drive is modified. I personally don't use this application and prefer to connect any USB drives to a PC and share out that way and use NAS.
