Help getting started
« on: February 24, 2009, 12:39:47 PM »

Ok, I just got a 323. Here is the situation

I still do not have any HDDs in, since they still have not arrived.

I plugged in the 323 to my Acer Aspire One hoping to configure it. But when it tries to automatically assign an IP address, it cannot, and I get the yellow question mark on the windows tray. The easy search utility can see the device, but I cannot configure it, since the configure button is gray.

So I tried to assign an IP address by myself, the 192.168.0.34. Then it connects to the network fine, but the Easy search utility cannot see it. I open my browser and point to 192.168.0.34, but all I get is a white page (no errors, seems to be connected but nothing appears)

I have AVG 8.0, and even turned off the firewall, but same issue. What am I missing?

I do not think you can plug the DNS-323 directly to your computer by lan cable, you may be able to do it with a crossover cable but I have not tried. Or try to go through a router that will auto assign an IP.

I see that you are eager to get the dns up and running but there is not much you can do without the drives.

One thing I would suggest if you want to use the NAS as a backup and are eager to do something while you wait for the drives, try to google search "ffp funplug backup" and read the instructions on the wiki to schedule a backup from Volume_1 to Volume_2 on a nightly basis. I have limited linux experience and this worked great, you do not use RAID, which is not really a BU solution.

Also in the instructions is how to install the drives, i know it sounds dumb but the righthand drive bay (if you are looking at the front) is Volume_1 and the left hand bay is Volume_2. Make sure to insert a drive into the right hand bay first, this is just what I hear.

Also, before you flash to the newest firmware, make sure to "restore factory defaults" and the flash the 1.06 firmware (or whatever). There is a glitch some people are experiencing with the UPNP settings that needs to have the DNS restored to defaults before OR after a firmware upgrade.

(sorry if metioning Fun_plug is not allowed)

Good Luck

Well, I am planning on plugging the device on a network that is ran by a win2000 server, but I did not want to do the configuring through that. I wanted to plug it it on a computer before, and upgrade the firmware if necessary, and play around with it. I tried it in two machines, with the blue cable that comes with it, and the result is the same...You think a crossover will make a difference?

I gave it up. Plugged it in the networked and arranged an IP through the server. Worked right away.

Just in case you're curious - your initial problem was caused by the ip address.  Had you entered 192.168.0.32 (your post says you entered 192.168.0.34) in the browser, you should have gotten the web admin page.

The blue cable would have worked, even though it is a straight through cable - a crossover cable is not required with most gigabit connections, since these typically will automatically provide the crossover function.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

I am having similar kind of problem. I have connected the device with blue cable directly to my conputer and inserted two WD Caviar Green driver in it. Easy Search Utility finds it well, but when I select it "configure" button turn grey and I can't start formatting drives. I also can't connect through browser 192.168.0.32. I just get an error that page is nor available.

What to try next?

You will need to assign a static IP address to you PC in the same IP address range as the DNS-323 (192.168.0.32 default IP address). It can be anything between 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.254 just not the same address as the DNS-323.
