Always need to disconnect printer to print wirelessly
« on: January 24, 2014, 11:52:05 AM »

Hello everyone,

I tried to navigate in the forum to find my answers and I can't find.

I have 2 PC(windows 7) connected with wires to my DIR-655(hardware version A4....firmeware 1.37NA)

My printer is Canon imageclass MF3240 connected via USB to my DIR-655

Every time I try to print(with both PC) it doesn't work unless I disconnect and reconnect the printer. Like if shareport forgot my printer.

Thank you for your advices

Regards

Yes, you can only use SP per device per session at a time.

If you need to connect with the printer from various devices at the same time, may I suggest that you install a D-Link DPR series print server with the printer then you can print to an IP address for the printer instead of using SharePort.

Hello FurryNutz,
Thank for your suggestion. This is what I was thinking about to do but it mean to buy another piece of equipment with another software   ??
The reason why I bought D-Link Dir-655 router was because it was supposed to allow printer sharing and it did ok when at the beginning 4 years ago I was using it with Windows Vista on one PC and Window XP on the other. It was working well for the 2 PC.
Now with Windows 7 I began to have problems.
One thing I forgot to specify is that I was using   Avast   antivirus software with Internet security which have a firewall.
Shareport was unable to connect to my printer.
So I though that it was more a problem with Avast software.
Then yesterday (Saturday) I try with Avast completely disable for 10 minutes.
When I did disable Avast agent Shareport connect to my printer and it seem to be working well.
Today I just made some test using disconnection request and printing seem to be working well.
But my other questions is concerning  Avast utilities on how to allow connection in this firewall.
If you have any idea on which applications to allow because I think that Shareport also use others applications such as in Windows and how to do it.
A reply would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry for my English my usual language is French.
Best regards

Yes, this is how SP work, one session connection at a time. SP works ok, it's just you can only use it one at a time. Having the printer shared on a LAN connection is a preferred method if you seem to have more than one or two PCs that needs print access more often.

Seems that you need to poke a hole or configure your security SW to allow connections. I recommend only running Anti-Virus programs and disable or remove any Firewall applications as these are really not needed since the router has a built in firewall already.

Thanks for the reply.
This is what I just did and SP seem to be working well
Should I study how to activate D-Link router firewall or is it already setup
Again thanks for your good advise

Check for SPI under Advanced/Firewall.
