Recently, I almost bricked my DNS-323 while attempting to go from (official DLink) f/w 1.07 to 1.10.
The f/w upgrade went fine but then I noticed that the hard drive (HD) LEDs were not blinking anymore while the main/power button LED and the network LED were unaffected. So I decided to "downgrade" to 1.09 but the process never completed and the unit appeared to be bricked. However, with a lot of good advice here in this forum from Ivan and Fordem I was able to find a procedure that enabled me to rescue my DNS-323. Once recovered, my unit was in f/w 1.09 (again official DLink) but STILL the HD LEDs were not operating (blinking) at all.
So, I took the plunge and installed Alt-F (by itself, not the "over the top" method).
Everything worked fine, I now have a fully working unit only with a (IMHO) better, more functional, more features f/w. Guess what, my HDs do blink but not blue, only amber when I intentionally broke the RAID-1 to test the new f/w etc. But when I configured the box for permanent/normal use the HD LEDs never came on in blue color.
Well, I am not an electronics wizard (even though my 9 y.o. daughter thinks I am!) so I could be wrong but IT IS possible that the circuitry that drives these LEDs (blue) has failed in some way. Failed, maybe, but without affecting the rest of the box, since it's functional and operable as it first came out of it's packaging about 7 (!!!) years ago. Plus they will still light amber when something is wrong so, that's a consolation.
So, instead of worrying about the LEDs, which can be an almost impossible project to procure, and successfully replace (tight quarters) without breaking something else, I chose to ignore the issue, install another f/w which by the way gives me more functionality to monitor the HDs and their RAID configuration, and I feel 100% safe since I can setup the system to send me daily emails about the status of all my storage components. I mean even the DLink f/w will allow you to do that, but IMHO with less flexibility and features.
Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, I thought I'd contribute my (success) story and help someone not waste his/her time in something that can be ignored and mitigated another way.
Thank you!
