Having an issue lately where as the number of wireless devices on my network increases, the signal drops.  I am trying to figure out what are the best settings within my DLink to 'fight' this issue.

• Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
• What wireless modes are you using?
• 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
• Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
• Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
• What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
• What wireless devices do you have connected?
• Any cordless house phones?
• Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
• If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."

What does Single Node N mean ? If all of your devices support N mode, then you could run the WiFi setting in single mode N instead of mixed G and N. Not all devices support N mode. You'll need to refer to the devices Mfr support site for information regarding specs.

How many? Or can you post a screen shot of the InSSIDer app results?

This explains HT 20/40 http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48327.0 Basically, if you can run single mode N, WPA2 and AES only, you can disable HT20/40Mhz C if all of your devices support single mode N. This will provide the best performance.

Any wired devices that have a LAN connection that does any heavy streaming or gaming, I highly recommend using the LAN wired connect to the back of the router for best network performance. Gaming on video streaming on WiFi can be problematic as more devices are being used.

I'd also recommend setting up some QoS rules for gaming and video streaming and those devices that just need general internet connections.

I have some G devices, so I can change that.

There are 10 SSID's broadcasting around me.

Ok so you'll need to use mixed mode and leave HT20/40 enabled.

If you have 10 other WiFi neighbors around you, this could be interfering with this router.
What channels are they using? Are any of them using 1, 6 or 11?

Do you have any devices that are 5Ghz supporting?

How woould I know if I have devices that support 5GHz ?

I was also thinking of getting one of the new D-Link routers.......Maybe this one:  DIR-826L

It would replace the DIR-655 I have, or maybe use it as an extender. Looking to boost the signal over all.

Thoughts ?

You'll need to contact the devices Mfr support site for specs and information on what they support. Since your area has some WiFi neighbors on 2.4Ghz, it might be good to switch to 5Ghz if possible for those devices that can or be upgraded to 5Ghz.

The 826L is a great router. I have this one too. However it can't be used as an extender. You could use it as a wired AP though giving you dual band WiFi. You could use both the 655 and 826L in wired AP mode. you'll just need to ensure that the 655 and 826L are using different channels on 2.4Ghz. Say channel 1 on 655 and 11 on the 826L. One thing you can try is this on the 655: Managing Signal Congestion It might help with some of the congestion.
