Hi all - I purchased a DNS 345 and put a few fireball drives in it. I did the basic setup, (and raided them as one large drive) and left it be. I'm a mediumly aware user, but am not familiar with all of the settings the setup has, since I've never had to deal with it before.

I was hoping to use the drives as an extension of my current hard drive (not as a backup), since I have tons of photos and videos that I use for work.

From the get go, it has performed poorly for me (due to my ignorance of what I should do!):

- I have never been able to access it beyond as a Guest (though just this morning used the online tool to modify this - hooray!)
- I cannot use my Finder search to locate items on the drive
- it is exceedingly slow to pull things up (my mac is 3 years old, and I just installed a new dual band router yesterday - dlink 850l)
- When I store files there, and try to access them through programs such as Lightroom, they are frequently missing thumbnails, etc.
- I have to re-mount the drive every few hours if it's not in direct use.

I've done hours of searching, and updated my firmware to the latest, turned on the AFP setting, but nothing seems to have changed.

In short, I hate this thing, but I know it's missing something - I am turning to you for wisdom - I hope you can help!

Did you map the DNS-345 volume as a network drive on your Mac? How are you accessing the data currently?

Hm - I'm not sure re: network drive - where can I confirm this?

and I was data accessing it by logging in as a guest (tho just this am figured out how to add myself as a user, so finally accessing it that way!)

• Press Command+K and the Connect to Server window will open
  
• Enter smb://[SHARECENTER_IP_ADDRESS]/Volume_1 where [SHAREcENTER_IP_ADDRESS] is replaced with the IP address of the D-Link ShareCenter (e.g smb://192.168.0.3/Volume_1)
  
• Press Connect
  
• The newly mounted HDD should appear on the Mac desktop and Finder window

ok, that's now up and working - thanks - will that mean it never logs off / logs on at every restart?

as for the other issues (speed, indexing) - will that help too?

anything i can do in the settings to improve this?

This procedure will automatically connect the shared volume after reboot:

• Click on the Apple Menu and open the System Preferences
  
• Click Accounts
  
• Click Login Items
  
• Click the + button
  
• Select the ShareCenter volume and click the Add button
  
• Close the System Preferences

Any thoughts on improving the indexing and searchability of the drive?

An addendum to your new FAQ - in os 10.9.2 (and I think earlier too?):

Click on the Apple Menu and open the System Preferences
Click Users and Groups
 Click Login Items
Click the + button [In my case this was 'Click the check box beside the volume you want to add from the list']

Thank you, I updated the FAQ accordingly. I typically don't use a Mac -- I was going on part memory and part reference material. Not sure about the indexing as that's something at the OS level rather than the ShareCenter.

Perhaps a Mac guru will read this and contribute their thoughts.

Glad I could help! . . . and I learned a thing or two about the Mac in the process.

So, things are much better - drive pulls up and is much more consistent now.

Remaining issues:
- I don't know how to change the ownership of the drive - so whenever I try to delete a folder or rename it, it says I need a password, or don't have enough permission to to that. Even the default sorting of the drive isn't up for modification
- get info on the drive exceedingly slow - takes a minute to calculate things
-indexing and searching still very slow too - a minute to find things

When I get info on the drive, it says I have 'custom access' - the user is (unknown), but says I have permission to read and write.

I have tried applying the read/write to 'apply to enclosed folders' - but still nothing.
