Hairpinning possible with DIR-605L + how to do it?
« on: April 20, 2014, 09:35:37 AM »

Hi

I'm creating a project where I will run a local website from a laptop, wich is connected to a WIFI-router.
The router itself is not connected to the internet, it only has to work for people who connect locally to the WIFI.

I was wondering if it was possible with the DIR-605L that people could use an URL I made up (like http://cedkeswebsite.org) instead of using the IP (192.168.0.100). For the moment the website is up and working, I can access with another computer and mobile devices. For server I am using WAMP.

Thanks in advance for the help

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.

I don't believe this is a feature of the router.  Seems like what you'd need is to also be running a DNS on the laptop, and set the laptop IP as the DNS in the router settings.
I don't know if this is even possible, though I suspect it is.

This looks like something that is possible with custom dd-wrt firmware through DNSMasq, but dd-wrt for the DIR-605L was "work-in-progress" last I checked.
Also, that way you'd be using a custom TLD, like "cedkeswebsite.local"
