I've always kept my DNS323,325 & 345 behind my DIR655. Once in awhile I'll open up a port and use dynamic DNS to access the files remotely but I'm always worried about the security and protecting my files so I always end up turning it off. Everything is backed up so no worry about someone destroying the data, however, I have private information on them that I wouldn't want someone to get hold of. Main reason I want to have access is so my grandmothers can look a family pictures and watch movies of the kids as they grow up.
What is the best way to secure the data. Would it be better to use the Cloud app versus just setting up a port in the DIR655 and using dynamic DNS? The Cloud app would still require some form of access through the DIR655, correct? I of course have passwords setup to access the volumes. When I formatted the drives I didn't use any encryption but that would only be a security issue if the drive gets physically stolen, correct? Whats the best method and what are the risks even with the best method?
Currently to access the data I just setup a virtual server and some high number public port, and the private port I set at 445. I use the free dlink ddns service to access the device directly. Again I only have turned this one once or twice just to try it and it does work but with the security concerns I've shut it off.
