Hello,

I poked around the forum and could not find a thread that addressed these issues. I have a Raid 1 set up on a DNS 320 firmware v2.0 for a couple years.

Issue #1 - Resolved (?)
The other week I was poking around the application management panel and decided to play with the iTunes server. After trying to configure the iTunes server, the DNS-320 entered an infinite loop of trying to build the iTunes library. The build activity froze up the DNS 320. In an attempt to break the cycle, I performed a factory reset. The reset removed the infinite loop but wiped out my groups and user specifications.

Issue #2 - Active
My setup included two users who had access to specific sub-directories under Volume_1. User1 was assigned to group user1 and User2 was assigned to group user2. The folder permissions on each of the users seems to have stuck with the directories that still exists on my HDDs. While rebuilding my configuration I attempted to redefine the users and groups, however access to these folders was not being permitted.

Trying to resolve the permissions issue another way, I tried to change the permissions on the directories using the Web File Server. However, directly clicking on the directories of interest provided no options for modifying the directory permissions. Poking around some more I noted I could modify the Privileges for the Ajax directory. After looking at the properties for the Ajax directory I then noticed that the properties for all the remaining directories now erroneously reported that the directory was the Ajax directory and the Privileges options were now active. After confirming the properties, the directory that was previously inaccessible became accessible. To add another layer to this, if I log out of the Web UI and log back in then go back to the Web File Server and click the properties for the directory, the properties report the correct directory and all options are inaccessible. If I confirm these properties, once again, the directory becomes inaccessible for the user.

I'm currently creating new directories under \volume_1  and copying content into those directories. The newly created directories don't exhibit the same behavior - they show the correct properties and allow access to modifying the privileges. Now I just need to to assign the intended owner and group attributes.

It occurs to me that backing up a stable version of the settings before playing with iTunes Server may have saved me a lot of trouble. However, that's now hind site and I need to recover my configuration. I do plan on saving my settings once recovered.

Surely there must be a better way of resolving these issues. Does anyone have some insights?

Thanks!

Why are you trying to set up permissions using the web server rather than just logging in to the unit by using the IP address?  Since you reset to factory defaults you need to login as admin with no password to the system.

Once you are logged in, click on the 'Management' tab, then select 'Account Management' and setup your users and groups as you want them, not forgetting the 'network shares' section as well.

While there it is a good idea to give the admin login a password.

Also while you are logged in check the other settings under the management section because any other changes you had made prior to the factory reset would have been wiped.

In the past I used permissions in the Web File Server (WFS) to limit user access to specific directories. I've already logged into the machine as admin, changed the admin pw, and set up the user accounts. What I can't seem to do is customize the permissions using the WFS.

This iteration I'm learning more about the "Network Shares" feature of the DNS firmware. This appears to be a superior approach as the privileges to the actual directories don't need to be controlled. Rather, the permissions on the network share can be controlled and then saved to the configuration file.

Relocalizer, my network admin is always muttering: 'He who controls the network controls everything', and he is correct.

Always test everything you setup and/or change to be sure it does what you intend.  Be careful with FTP access (if you enable it) and use good passwords as well as limiting access to the guest account.

When you have everything setup to your satisfaction save the full configuration file to a computer and copy it to a safe place as well (we have the config files for all our units saved to one of our servers, the storage system, the other units and the remote off site backup).

I must congratulate you for taking the time to learn what you can do with the unit - I just wish others would, but then we wouldn't have as much turnover as we do if they did ;)
