Setting up new DIR-655 on Fiber-to-the-Premises (no modem)
« on: June 20, 2014, 09:49:36 AM »

I would like to replace my existing DIR-615 with a DIR-655. The 615 doesn't seem to have enough signal strength to stream 1080p to my new Roku Streaming Stick downstairs. Otherwise it has been fine. Since the 615 was set up, TDS has installed fiber-to-the-premises. When they did this, they reclaimed the Actiontec modem I had, and I am now using ethernet from the 615 directly to a wall jack with DHCP. My problem in setting up the new 655 is this: both the installation CD and the FAQ How-To say the required first step is to turn off or unplug the modem, which obviously I can not do. I am able to get the 655 to provide excellent wifi service over my LAN, and can access the router's web page, but I cannot get a connection to the internet, even when renewing the DHCP lease, presumably because the modem has not been reset. Is there a standard setup procedure for my situation? I'm wondering if I need to call TDS to see if they can remotely reset my connection, but my understanding is there is no modem anywhere in the pipline to reset. Also, I'm not sure at what point they would need to do the reset. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

You need to remove the 615 from the mix and install the 655 in place of the 615. You don't have to use the CD and you can set up the router using the Setup Wizard built into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1 or manually set it up. If the router gets a public IP address from the ISP service or modem where ever that may be, that is preferred and let the router handle the single NAT configuration.

Having 2 routers on the same line will cause problems.

ISP>DIR-655<>Connected clients to the router.

Right, that's what I've done, just disconnected the DIR-615 and installed the 655 in it's place. I have run the setup wizard and was able to get everything configured to set up the LAN and the wireless network, but can't get an internet connection (the WAN Network Status remains Disconnected and the Internet LED on the router stays orange, even after renewing the DHCP Client Connection). I'm still thinking I'll need to call the ISP to have them reset the fiber connection remotely, if that's possible, unless there is another solution, or I'm missing something in the manual setup.
Hardware version is B1.
Firmware version is 2.11
Region is Wisconsin, U.S.A.

Was a factory reset performed before and after v2.11 was updated?

Ya, something on the 655 isn't getting the connection with the ISP service/modem.

Swap cables and test.

Try setting a manual WAN Port speed of 10 then 100Mb under Advanced/Advanced Networking. Might be that the connection speed isn't being handled correctly from the ISP service.
