I am experiencing a frustrating problem with my DSM-750, and DLink is having some trouble duplicating it. So I would like to find out how widespread the problem is.

The problem: in Media Center Extender mode, sometimes when I play video files they cut to the "Finished" screen before the end of the actual video. Have you ever had this? If so:
-are you wired/wireless?
-how often does it occur?
-what file type, video codec, and bitrate?

If you play videos often and DO NOT have this problem, please also reply:
-are you wired/wireless?
-what file types/video codecs do you use?

While I don't use the extended every day, or watch videos every day, I can safely report that I'm not aware of any video file skipping to the end prematurely - at least not that I can remember.  Most files played are the dvr-ms type from recorded television.  I also watch a fair amount of content downloaded from TV Tonic.  Those files are mostly WMV files.  I am using the extender wirelessly.

I have this problem.

1) I am wireless.
2) Happens every time. I can hardly remember a single video that played all the way through.
3) They are all .AVI files. Not sure about the codec.
4) I have a Trendnet TEW-631BRP Wireless-N router (this may matter).

On a related note, DVR-MS Recorded TV and Live TV functionality is flawless. This problem occurs only when playing non-Recorded TV content from my Video Library.

I run in the Media Lounge mode on WinXP and have problems with the video locking up or going into a frame by frame mode. I have tried WMV9, MP4 and AVI, both wireless and running from a usb flash drive. D-Link support put us onto the  D-Link Media server software as I used to use Nero on a PC or a Media server function on my router, this did improve video playback but still get this problem. Haven't found satisfactory codec settings as yet.

I have this problem too. I use only Media Lounge mode with Windows Media Player 11 running on Windows XP Pro. It does not affect all files, but all the files it does affect are DRM protected and from the same source. Typically lose the last 5% of the file, but they play perfectly in WMP 11.

I have this problem with every movie I play. They all shut down after 2 to 20 minutes when using the extender mode. I can play them using WMP11 but it has a separate issue with stopping then fast forwarding to catch up. I can not run the Network Tune as it always gives me an error. I use the DSM-750 wireless to a DIR-655 and then to my laptop with a DWA-643. Seems like it should work much better than it does since all are D-Link N. The movies are avi, Xvid Codec usually MP3 audio. At one time the extender feature actually played the movies all the way through. I had to use a utility from Napster to clear the DRM register on my computer so I could use WMP11. I wish I could use Network tune so I could see how good a connection I have but it does not work. It does work if I use the PCI Intel card on my Laptop so it is an issue with the DWA-643 or N, not sure which. If I ever come across a solution I will post here. I have been fighting with these issues for 3 weeks, what a pain to watch movies on my computer on my TV. My OS is Vista Home Premium, SP1.

 I though my unit was defective but it looks like everybody has the same problem. If you are using the DSM-750 wirelessly you may be experimenting the same problems I have: movies stop suddenly, cant FF, sometimes can't connect to WMC, can't continue after pause, network error, etc. In a few words, my conclusion is that DLINK failed on the DSM-750 exactly were they should be very strong: in the wireless design. If you want to solve your problem, connect it wired or use a Bridge as the DAP-1522. See the details of my troubleshooting below.

 D-Link requests you to check a wired connection to see if your problem persist. Some times you can't do it because you need a very long cable or to move TV and extender next to your router or PC. Even if you can do it, you may not stay long enough to watch a full movie and find out if works correctly or not.

 
 TROUBLESHOOTING
 To find out what caused the problem, I used Windows Media Center (WMC) Network tuner. If your wireless connection is too bad, it doesn't even pass the first step or can't connect to WMC. My problem is that the network tuner in bar graph mode shows intermittent range between very good and bad, switching every few seconds.
 I bought a dual band wireless-N DIR-825 router to use with the DSM-750 as D-LINK reccommends. I connected the DSM-750 to the 5GHz band as reccommended. As some threads about this router doesn't talk well about its range, I wasn't sure if it was my DSM-750 or the router what caused the problem. On the other hand, I was transmitting video flawlessly to another device downstairs, much further away from the router. So to put the router out of the question, I checked the DSM-750 in the 2.4GHz band and I had exactly the same behaviour. Then I replaced the router with a DAP-1522 DLINK connected as access point and the behaviour was the same. Finally I used the DAP-1522 in BRIDGE mode, that means I used it as the wireless receiver and connected a network cable to the DSM-750. The Network tuner shown a very stable signal with all bars on. Tested with WMC movies and works perfectly!!! No freezing, no problems pausing and resuming, no sudden stops.

I hope this helps you. I'm happy about the DSM-750 except for the wireless reception. I'd like to change the unit for another one. But it seems to be a general problem.

Can anyone willing please provide me with the HW rev of the DSM-750 you have and the make, model of your router with the firmware, hardware version, and the wireless encryption settings used?

I have tried three different routers: A Linksys WRT300N and two D-Link DIR-655s. One of the 655s was hardware rev A1/A2, the other was A3, both with firmware 1.20. I tried no encryption, WEP and WPA Personal...

And in all cases, the 750+router worked fine in my sister's apartment but not in mine. I even switched our DSM-750s to see if that was the problem. It is absolutely not the devices. It has to do with wireless environments. In my sister's place the "network tuner" signal never hits bottom. In my apartment it has a very strong signal but it occasionally cuts out briefly - the line hits the bottom for a bit and then pops back up. The cut-out isn't even enough to make it lose buffer (I know this because if I'm playing a different file type then there's no problem) but with MPEG-4 ASP AVIs when this happens, the device thinks the file is done.

SUMMARY OF THE PROBLEM: if the DSM-750 stops getting the video stream for [perhaps 3] seconds, and the video stream is MPEG-4 ASP, it thinks the file is done. As we have seen in the past, D-Link is very likely not going to be able to replicate this problem, unless they have a way of forcing the computer to temporarily stop streaming while not actually disconnecting... Our only hope as users is that D-Link tries to fix the problem even though they can't duplicate it!

My DSM750 is HW VER: A1 Firmware 1.02
My DIR655 is HW Ver: A3 Firmware 1.21
I now use an internal PCI Card Intel WiFi Link 5300 AGN
I still have video drops using Media Center and the Network tuner does not work, it just crashes.
I am using a Dell 1705E with Vista Home Premium SP1
I forgot to say I am using WPA-2 Personal AES encryption

I now have Vista SP2 and WOW what a difference, yeah right. It worked a couple of times, now when I setup my media center extender, media center on the PC crashes. I still have the stop and fast forward using Media Player issue. I really thought SP2 fixed some things but it didn't. I am very disappointed in the way the DIR 655 and DSM 750 play together. It appears to me that network tune will not work using N.

Solved the lockup problem

After many Emails with "Tech Support" they thoroughly convinced me they are in the wrong game.

Dumped the DSM-750 and went to AppleTV

Never missed a beat since.
