DIR-655 as secondary router looses W-Lan connection
« on: June 17, 2014, 02:16:34 AM »

Hi everybody,

I have kinda annoying problem. I switched recently to another internet provider (T-Online) and use their Speedport router to connect to the internet.

I reconfigured my DIR-655, used for years now without any problems, to work as a secondary router to build a DMZ (I have some Raspberry Pis, doing some server stuff).

Unfortunately the W-LAN connection to my DIR-655 breaks every 10-20 minutes and needs to reboot in about 2 minutes before I can reconnect. I read a lot of threads, tutorials and HowTos but I cannot figure out whats going wrong there.

My setup is the following

Speedport W 721 V (external router)
  • Connects to the internet
  • DHCP active 192.168.2.100-199
  • WLAN active - auto channel
  • IP-Adress Gateway: 192.168.2.1
  • Subnetzmask: 255.255.255.0

D-Link DIR-655 (secondary router)
  • Hardware-Version: A2
  • Firmwareversion: 1.34EU
  • Internet connection: IP via DHCP (from external router)
  • Primary DNS-Server: 0.0.0.0
  • Sekundary DNS-Server: 0.0.0.0
  • IP-Adress Gateway: 10.0.0.1
  • Subnetzmask: 255.0.0.0
  • DHCP active 10.0.0.10-254
  • Primary WINS-IP-Adress: 0.0.0.0
  • Secondary WINS-IP-Adress: 0.0.0.0
  • WLAN active - auto channel
  • Cable connection from Speedport LAN port 1 to DIR-655 internet input port

As I wrote, the whole setup is working but the W-LAN issue that I loose the connection every 10-20 minutes.
A ping test showed that around 10 pings in one minute end up in a timeout when I'm connected to the DIR-655. All pings are fine when I'm connected to the Speedport via W-LAN or to the DIR-655 via cable.
Switching the W-LAN channels results in some more or less ping timeouts but doens't help fixing the connection loss problem.

Has someone an idea what I'm doing wrong in my setup?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works.

I would review this for the 655, if your going to keep your ISP modem as the main host router:
Turning a router into an AP.

Hi,

thanks for the links. I read them but couldn't find any answer to my problem. Maybe except the "Don't do it" outcome.

As I wrote in my first post the Hardware version of the router is A2, the Firmwareversion is 1.34EU. I don't know exactly what you mean with region. I'm living in Berlin, Germany if that helps.

I like the idea of that DMZ thing, with different networks with access in only one direction. I read a lot of posts about it and just tried it out.

You can do that too, DMZ is needed to help about some of the double NAT conditions with having 2 routers online. I recommend avoiding double NAT if possible. If the ISP modem can't be bridged and the 655 used as the main host router, try the DMZ on the main host router for the 655.
