I bought a DCS-5020L today, brought it home, and set it up. All seems to work well enough so far. A few things I haven't quite figured out, though they might be pipe dreams:

1) In the iPhone app (the only place I've found push notification controls), I have enable push notifications, but in testing, they seem to come rarely and erratically, despite many motion events. So I turned off push notifications, but still get them erratically, including some that say the device was "disconnected". I wouldn't mind the push notifications if I could figure out how to set the frequency or something, but as they are I don't feel I can rely upon them.

2) I have set the camera up to email me six frames upon motion. Is there an easy way to disable this temporarily (ie: when I am home and moving about)? I'd like to use the iPhone app to do so, but that feature seems unavailable, and logging into the camera via browser/ip address to disable the motion sensor seems unnecessarily cumbersome. Surely there's a simpler method (besides uplugging the camera)?

3) Also somewhat on this subject, generally - I have reserved ip 192.168.0.99 in my router (Motorola SBG6782) for the camera, so that I won't have to look up the ip everytime I want to log in and disable the motion sensor. However, the camera seems to obtain a new ip anyway, periodically, and I can't tell why. None of my other devices that have reserved ips lose their reservations (even when rebooted), but the camera does even when not power cycled. Anyone know why?

Let's look at your third question...

It's possible there is another device that has 192.168.0.99 set as a static IP address that keeps trying to take the reserved IP from the DCS-5020L. Try reserving a different IP address for the DCS-5020L and see what happens.

I had tried several different ips for the camera (none of which had been reserved or static-assigned - I got this router new just three weeks ago), but each one changed within a relatively short time. I went through all my settings today and discovered that the wifi connection was set to "no security" (though I thought I had set it otherwise in the initial setup program), and that the range extender was turned on, though I don't need it on. I corrected both of these, and so far the assigned ip has held for two hours. Perhaps the lack of a WPA password was the culprit.

As for the first two issues:

1: I've just turned off push for now, as it seems not to do much of value.

2: I found a place in the lite app (there are two separate settings locations and I'd overlooked one of them) to easy disable the motion detector.

What is the Mfr and model of the main host router?

Motorola SURFboard SBG6782 (cable modem/router provider by ISP).

One thing you could try is to change wireless modes on the ISP modem and see if this helps any, try single mode G or N then Mixed G and N to see if anything changes. 20/40Mhz auto should be used if it's available on this modem.

This is Arris's first intro ISP Modem/Router combo after they bought the division from Motorola. Not sure about if this unit is kept up to date or operation and stability of the WiFi. Routers and WiFi on ISP modems can be problematic and not as good or don't offer better features as dedicated WiFi routers like D-Link has. We have seen some issues with Arris branded modems however, Motorola stand alone modems are good.

Thanks, FurryNuts. It's been running all day and hasn't changed ip yet, so I'm going to leave the router alone for now and assume the problem was caused by the security setting, but I'll try you suggestions if the trouble recurs.

I'd rather have a standalone router, but I'm not inclined to buy one right now. (I actually have three older Cisco and DLink routers, but they're all a bit too dated...).

Also make sure that "static IP" is selected in the Network Setup page of your camera, with the preferred IP also entered.  You didn't mention whether you had done that step.
