Hi,

I'm connecting my DNS straight to a laptop so its not connected to the router, but I can't find a way to access the drives for storage from my laptop.

A bit of background

The set up utility on the disk would not recognise the initial blank password so I've logged in via the web UI. When using the setup.exe the device would show up but just wouldn't accept a blank password.

I've installed 2 * 4TB drives (WD Red   WD40EFRX). They are listed as compatible on the WD website and were sold bundled with the NAS.

Both Drives show up on the OLED and were testable using the SMART test in the GUI.

However under the hard drive configuration menu initially only the SET RAID Type button was visible but wouldn't do anything when clicked. After some time a new button appeared (not sure of the exact words) that was the format new drives button.

I clicked this and chose a RAID one formation. The GUI changed to show initialising and a % progress bar. I left this running overnight and in the morning it still said 0% initialised. I rebooted the GUI and can see the RIAD drive in the GUI and the OLED on the DNS states volume_1:normal 0% used.

I can't for the life of me figure out what to do next???

The way I want this set up is hard wired to my laptop and desktop but not on the network. I'm just using it for a backup. It will be networked later on its life but initially I just want it to back up what's on my desktop but also to be able to access files on the DNS from my Laptop (wired).

Any help on what I need to do


I'm windows 7 64 bIt.


A few times the GUi has stated 'Still trying to get an available IP from DHCP server the redirection of the GUI failed' I presume this is the smoking gun!

Do I need to assign a static IP?

A couple of other things:

The system info menu shows my hard drives in raid configuration, but the Hard drive information menu states no volume found. Is this because the hard drives are now an array?

okay i've been fiddling - decide it was the LAN settings so I tried to set up a static IP using the instructions from image 11 page 25 of the online manual

Ip: 192.168.0.101
Sub:  255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS1: 192.168.01
DNS2: 172.19.10.100

It logged me out of the web ui and tried to open 192.168.0.101
My DNS is now showing 192.168.0.101 on OLED but I can't connect to it. I pinged it and got 2 out 4 failures.

My IP config is showing 2 LAn connections and one WAN connection. I presume the NAS details should align to one of the LAN IP/subnets

My LAN 2 is
IP4: 10.30.1.22
sub: 255.255.255.252

the other LAN (1) is
Autoconfiguration ip4: 169.254.125.186
Sub:255.255.0.0

I've reset my DNS and the default IP is 169.254.161.165 and the subnet is 255.255 so presume I need to align to the Lan 1? but I don't know what to do. typing the DNS IP into chrome doesn't bring back anything, but I can ping it succesfully

Is it a workgoup vs homegroup thing?

When you are setting up a static IP address on the DNS, if your Laptop is not connected to the router and only the DNS, you can set up a static IP address on the laptop if your directly connect to the DNS with the Laptop using same process. Set your LT up as 192.168.0.33.

Okay, just logged into the web Ui and got a message about the sharecenter roaming the network and asked if it wanted to search for a network. failure to do so may cause failures later on.

SO i clicked yes.

No in my current Hard drive configuration I can finally see the current raid type and both the set raid and create a new volume buttons are present and clickable. Andi if i type the ip adress shown on the NAS I get to the WEB UI

I can also see the DNS in the Network list in explorer, so probably nearly there. I get the impression that time has been the healer here. Could the DNS have been doing things in the background and locking me out? I have installed 2*4TB hardrives

I have not done anything listed in the post above (yet), I did a factory reset to get rid of the IP settings I entered. My laptop is connected to the router.

Just going to eat dinner will be back in 30 minutes

If you own a router, I suggest attaching the DNS-345 to the router and using a reserved IP address through the router, with the DNS-345 in DHCP.

What browser are you using to access the web UI?  The DNS-345 works best with IE and you may have some issues with other browser types.  Although rare (this is something observed on some of the last generation NAS), it's possible the ShareCenter is confused by the Linux EXT partition created during your earlier failed formatting attempts. In cases like this, mounting the HDDs on a Windows PC, running a quick format as NTFS, and then deleting all the partitions usually fixes these types of issues.

I highly suggest that you install a external GB network switch between the main host router and the DNS and your LT. This will help segment the connection between your LT and the DNS and limit any un-necessary router management which isn't needed after the DNS is correctly set up.

I'm using Chrome, I  don't even have ie installed.

Everything looks to be working fine I can access and modify data on the dns. The only thing I haven't tried is hooking it up to my laptop and pc at the same time.
