DWR-512 3G connection stop working - need reset
« on: May 21, 2014, 06:30:18 AM »

Dear Forum,

I have a DWR-512 3G Dlink router, which is working with a SIM card with no problems but after several days (may be a month) suddenly the router loses connection and it can not re-connect.

It remains with link status connecting. I have to reboot it manually and it starts to work again.
The problem is that it is remotely installed so  I have to move to the placement to reboot it.

Do you know why?

The hardware version is: A1
Firmware Version :   V1.05 , 2013/01/16

Besides, is there any way to reboot it automatically every nigth (for example)?

Thanks,

Asier

Link>Welcome!

These units should not have to be reset periodically nor every day. A reason for the unit loosing a connection would be due to interferences...

  • What region are you located?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Dear FurryNutz,

Thanks for your response. My location is Spain, and I know that the connection can fail (like a phone), but after having been working for some time and failing sometimes it stays trying to reconnect to the network and it is not possible until I reset the router.

Regards,

So we have to troubleshoot the issue to find out why the device is not working after a period of time. You should not have to power cycle or reset the DWR everyday. It should run constantly as they are designed to do that. I've never had to reset any of my D-Link products everyday.

Please answer the questions presented and provide feedback and try some of the suggestions. The more we know about your situation, the better we can provide you with feedback and a possible solution to get the DWR working better.

You said it had been working up to a certain point. This tells me that this could be caused by interferences by other WiFi routers that may have moved into the area since.

Hi,

Yes, but I think that we are not talking about the same problem. ;)
The wifi network is working perfectly. I can connect to the router wireless through wifi network and it is ok, but the connection to Internet through 3G connection is failing.

It is as if your mobile phone lost the coverage and it couldnt connect again to the network when the coverage returned.

As if Recconect mode = auto didnt work properly:

This maybe a 3G signal issue and you may need to contact the 3G service provider for help and information.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office as well and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Did you find any solution for the 'manual' reset by switching of power?
We are having the same problem with a couple of these routers.

If 3G coverage is bad and no automatic reconnect.
