Real World Performance Questions
« on: January 04, 2015, 09:05:14 PM »

I've been using a DIR-655, with its WiFi turned off, as my primary Firewall/NAT Router right after my cable modem which is in bridge mode.

This has been working wonderfully for years, but with my last Internet upgrade to 300Mb/s, the Dir-655 can't quite keep up. It does pretty good at 240Mb/s, considering how old and inexpensive it is, but I want to upgrade.

I tried the DIR-868L, but while it can certainly handle the routing speed, it's logging and syslog functions are sadly lacking, not even up to the level the DIR-655 provides. So it's not suitable.

The DSR-500 and DSR-250, on the other hand, look like they're just what I need. So I'm looking for someone's hands-on experience, rather than just relying on the official D-Link spec sheets. In light of that, for either/both the DSR-500 or DSR-250:

What's the routing throughput in the real world using TCP packets (rather than the UDP packets used in the spec sheet test).
If I turn on the IPS (Intrusion Prevention systems), how much does that slow down the throughput?
If I turn on the WCF (web content filtering), how much does that slow down the throughput?
Will the DSR-500 get the 2.x firmware as the DSR-250 currently has? When?

Thanks for any feedback, (and Happy New Years)

While you wait for other postings, I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.
