DNS-345 UPS Compatibility
« on: January 04, 2013, 03:05:50 PM »

I'd like to add a UPS to supply my DNS-345.

Did a search of the forum and found a few references to UPS support, but only one reference http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=13216.msg118234#msg118234, for a DNS-323, that said that a APC Back-UPS 550 worked fine with the unit. The rest of the posts tended to say "if [the UPS] has a USB connector it should work." Not too confidence building.

If anyone has a UPS working with their DNS-345 would appreciate hearing what make and model you are using.

I understand that the UPS support is minimal (through something called NUT), so that the UPS has to run low on power, and it then sends a signal over the USB cable telling the NAS to shutdown. But that is still better than the alternative.  Noticed a few posts asking for an option to be added to the firmware allowing a new setting called "on battery time" to signal a shut down...will check to see if that has been added to the firmware 'wish list' post.

Discovered a post from March 2009 http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=4485.msg25735#msg25735 (for the DNS-323) with some good info. In that situation he initially used a Phillips UPS, and discovered that the NAS did not gather all the information that it could...the DNS-323 only showed:

UPS INFO        :
Manufacturer   : POWERCOM CO., LTD.
Product          : USB to Serial
Battery Charge: N/A
Status           : N/A

When he switched to a APC Back-UPS XS 1300 LCD more info was reported:

UPS INFO       :
Manufacturer  : American Power Conversion
Product          : Back-UPS XS 1300 LCD FW:836.H8 .D USB FW:H8
Battery Charge: 100 %
Status           : On Line

Would be nice if a list of supported UPS were presented, along the lines of the "compatible hard drives" listing...anyway, again, if anyone can post their experience with a UPS and their NAS would be appreciated.

Well, a nice surprise, my DNS-345 was waiting for me when I got home this evening. I had picked up a APC UPS on the way home, and loe and behold, after all the setup was done it is recognized. So I'll add this unit to the 'compatible' list, as ShareCenter System Management reports it:

UPS Status
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Device Information: Standalone Mode.
Manufacturer    APC
Product            Back-UPS ES 550G FW:843.K4 .D USB FW:K4
Battery Charge 100 %
Status              On Line

D-Link tested and approved compatibility for the following three USB UPS:

  • APC    BACK-UPS ES BE500TW
  • Tripp-Lite   SMART550USB
  • Phoenixtec   A-500Plus

UPS makes/models not included in this list are not necessarily incompatible with the DNS-345, they simply weren't tested.
