iTunes Server and Artwork
« on: September 15, 2014, 12:45:18 AM »

I can see that others have posted across the net about issues with NAS devices and iTunes Servers, but none really seem to nail the issue and say 'this is the answer'.

I have recently invested in a dLink DNS-320L and it has firmware 1.03 on it. I created a shared folder on the drive called 'Music' and can map to it in Windows (8.1 64-bit in case it makes a difference) and copied the files to the drive.

I configured the Multimedia Services -> iTunes Server Settings to :
Enabled
Not Root
To the Music folder on the volume (There is only 1 disk in the 320L currently)
No Password
MP3 Codepage ISO-8859-1 (Default Western European)
Auto Refresh 1 hour

Spark up iTunes (version 11.4.something - the latest as at the time of writing) and can see the 320L and all the music. However, there is no artwork.

Knowing Apple to be the cunning sods they are, I copied the Album Artwork folder into the Music folder on the 320L and looked to see if the files had the artwork attached to them.

Nothing ...  my iTunes when connected to the iTunes Server on the 320L does not display the artwork. Even telling it to 'Get Album Artwork' for tracks or albums does not work.

I have a Plex media server on a Linux machine on my network that points to the same collection of files. (Nothing like variety)...  it picks up album artwork happily - although this could be stored internally.

Has anyone managed to get iTunes to display artwork when the music is in a shared folder on a NAS?? If so HOW!!

I've got exactly the same problem, but it seems to be an iTunes limitation. All music shared with iTunes Server cannot be linked to an artwork. That's very annonying for me :(
