Hello,

I need some help with the configuration of the DNS-325. I have 2 HDīs installed with 3 Tb
per HD. Iīd like to use the system in Raid 0 (backup between both Hdīs). I use windows 7.

What Iīd like to do is the following:
* an automatically incremental, cyclic backup from a folder from a computer in my private network
to the DNS-325. If the computer is switched on the incremental backup should start.

To reach this, I tried this by using the NAS configuration tool:

Application --> local backups
   Category:   LAN Backup
   Type:       Folder
   URL:      \\192.168.178.111\tmp\
   Safe to:   Volume_1/daten/blabla/test/

If I try to test the URL, the test fails with the following message
   URL       \\192.168.178.111\tmp\
   Test Result    Fail
   File Size    Unavailable

I donīt know why and I donīt really have a clou how to manage it

Following questions:
* do I have (or how to do it) to release the folder, that Iīd like to backup in the network by using the
windows 7 option?
* am I completely wrong by using the "LAN Backup" method in the application menu?
* Is there a better way to reach my target to make a backup via lan?

Is the directory on your desktop PC configured through Windows as a shared folder? Without sharing enabled, the DNS-325 can't see the directory. Right-click on the folder to access the Share with properties. You can also test whether the folder is shared properly by attempting to access it from another PC on your LAN.

The correct application is Local Backups > LAN Backup, so you're on the right track. Also make sure you set Type = Folder. If you select File, the DNS-325 will not find the directory either.

thanks for your answer but I was not successfully.
I can access from all my network- computers to the DNS. But I think the way from the DNS to the computer is blocked. I donīt know why and I do not know how to check the connection from the DNS to the comps explicitly. The network among the computers works fine.

As network I use the windows 7 "homenetwork" option. Do I have to make some adaption on the DNS side to make the DNS as a part of the network?
Under >> Management >> System Management >> Device is the possibility to add a workgroup name. I tried this but there was no change in the behaviour.
But I was also not really sure what the workgroup name is, if I use the window 7 "homenetwork".

Do you have a further hint for me?

Hi,
log into your 325, go to Management, system, device...what workgroup does it show.  Then go to "open network and file sharing" by either right clicking the little "monitor" symbol in the lower right of your w7 machine and select it, or go through Control Panel.  Open it up and right at the top, there will be a graphic of your windows machine, then your workgroup name, then "internet".  These 2 should have the same workgroup name, and so should all the devices on your network if they are to communicate successfully.  Check all machines and devices.  If different adjust as necessary.  Good luck
Edit: Reboot all devices if you change anything.

thanks a lot for your reply. I did like you suggested. I found out the workgroup name of my windows 7 and set it into the DNS configuration.
But there is no improvement. It is not possible for the DNS to access to the URL of my computer.

Does anybody have a further idea to solve my problem.
a) do i have to setup an other kind of network under windows 7?
b) is it worth to install the tool on the DNS, where I can acces via "telnet" to check if I can access or ping my computer into the network?

Hi again,
Are you using more than one router on your network by any chance?  Who is the manufacturer for the router?  Is it your own or provided by the ISP?
Part of the reason I ask is that most of the more common routers use either 192.168.0.xxx or 192.168.1.xxx as their default range.  Yours is less common.

Hi folks,
since I have the DNS-325 I tried so many times to backup files or folders on the NAS; up to now I didn't succeed.
I have the same problem circled has. No matter whether I try to save a shared folder or a not shared folder (only backup shared folders doesn't make sence; that would mean I'm not able to backup my system unless I share the whole C:\; or I have to share all my data folders).
No matter what IP I type in the URL the NAS returns "test failed" unless I type in the IP of the NAS!!! I tried to name the HDD as C:\ in Win7-style or f.ex. sda in Linux-stile. I didn't get it to work with a Linux system neither.
My conclusion is: That's a bug in the FW of the NAS!!!
By the way I use FW DNS-325_fw_revA2_1-05B3_all_multi_20140613

Hi guys,
Thanks for refreshing my memory.  As I recall now, Dlink does not seem to think that this is a "bug" in their firmware, meaning they are not going to fix it.  As I recall the Dlink nas's will only do local backups to other Dlink NAS's with the stock firmware installed.  I believe if you use alternate firmware, I am pretty sure this is possible, but I don't do it.  For Windows 7 Pro, and Ultimate, you should be able to use the windows backup to your NAS, or use someother backup software running on your Windows machine.  I did try to schedule a W7 backup using the local backup feature of the nas and met with the same results as you folks....failure.

in the DNS-325 applications you have three options for backups
1. remote backups for "This section allows you to backup files on the ShareCenter to one or more remote NAS devices ..."
2a. local backups -> internal backup for "If your NAS device has two volumes you can click the Internal Backup radio button
                                                      to backup the data from the first volume to the second volume ..."
2b. local backups -> lan backup for "If you want to backup the data from your PC or another NAS device to your NAS device, click the LAN Backup radio button."
What we are claiming is 2b. from PC to the NAS.
And when I understand you right, with 2b the Dlink guys mean backing up data from the NAS to another NAS; but that's already Pos. 1..
And that's absolutly not what you can read on the right hand side of the configuration site I have the quotes from in " ... " (see above).
So I'm a bit confused.
I agree with f.ex. Acronis True Image  or with Win7 tool you can do backups from you PC to your NAS but that's something different from managing backups by the NAS and the NAS-OS.

I think we agree in principal.  To the best of my knowledge, this "bug" as you describe it has existed in the 325 and the 320 from the time they were first released.  I am not disagreeing with your description of the problem, I am just trying to say that apparently Dlink does not, at least to the degree that they would put resources into getting it to work.  I suspect that this particular problem is something that a lot of users have not come across because they just don't use it and because there are "work arounds" that may be employed.  Frankly, their media server / UPNP server is still a bit buggy, but initially it didn't work at all.

Was anbody successfull by doing a backup via LAN?

What is about the account name and the login pwd. Do I have to use this? I allways use the way without entering a pwd.

Maybe it is time to ask DLINK for help.

as already mentioned I think I tried nearly all possible variations including the login methods "account" and "anonymous". For "account" I typed in ID and password of my PC's network account. no success at all.
That's why I said it's a bug in the FW. I can understand that Dlink doesn't like to invest some man power in modifying the FW of an "old" device; that's costs.
On the other hand do they promise a feature that doesn't work as well in Help as in the data sheets "scheduled backup from PC to the NAS" or in the manual. In the manual they describe as follows: URL: "Enter the URL of the site or server you are initiating a transfer from. E.g. ftp://123.456.789/Test or ftp://123.456.789/test.txt". Since I don't have an ftp server running on my Win7 machine I couldn't test that on my Linux machine neither.
