Hi folks,

Just getting started with my DNS-320L and have come across this same problem mentioned last year.

I'm essentially using my DNS-320L as a backup drive at present in Raid 1. After setting up ShareCenter Sync, while some backups do successfully complete, I'm getting log errors with a few backups. The error message in the log, as previously reported, says "Failed to write directory \\192.168.1.XXX\Volume_1...

The backups seem to be stopping part way through. The \last folder contains empty folders and there is a \tmp folder containing folders and files up to the point that the error occurs.

I'm guessing that the problem is associated with pathnames that exceed a certain length because the backups seem to stop just before a file with a long filename. For example, some of my classical music files have the name of the work as the filename, such as:
08 Symphony no. 6 in F major, op. 68 Pastoral I. Pleasant, cheerful feelings aroused on approaching the countryside Allegro ma non troppo.mp3

Or, at least, that's what I've come to understand to date.

Is there a way to correct this problem? I'd really like to retain the existing filename and folder structure on my data drive.

Alternately, is there a filename best practice guide for the DNS file system>

Regards,

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

I just set my DNS-320L system up this past month and have the same problem.  I want to backup an entire drive and after 4 hrs all I get is empty folders in last/id0 and a couple of folders from the recycle bin in tmp/id0.  One of the recycle bin folders in tmp/id0 contains files and folders but in last/id0 only empty folders.  So what's the issue?  This post suggest file name length and others permissions.  If it's file name length we'll need to find another backup program because I'm not going to go thru all my files and rename them and if it's permissions exactly where and what permissions need to be set.  Security for for the DNS is set to Special but if that's not adequate you shouldn't be able to even create a folder.  Thanks.
