policy: machine list limitation
« on: December 04, 2014, 01:12:34 PM »

Goal:  Block kids' devices from the internet at certain times of the day.

Method:  Utilize access control policy feature to list all the mac ids that shouldn't have access on a timed schedule.

Problem:   I have hit the DIR-655 limitation on how many mac ids I can put in the machine table.   Max is 8.   We apparently have (too) many internet capable devices to limit.

Is there another DIR-655 feature I can use to attain that goal?

Thanks!

Ya, I think 8 is the max for this model router. You may need to manually limit what the kids use, by maybe keeping the device locked up for the period of time they can't be used. Try to figure out what devices need the management by the router and lower priority devices that would need to be managed however can't be by the router and would need external intervention.  :-\ The recourses on these routers are limited. They were based probably on the average home not having a ton of devices as some years back. Now as technology grows, house holds now have numerous devices.  ::) Newer generation routers may have more recourses to allow for more device management. I'm still limited on what I have for a two person household.  ;D

What i the grand total of household devices in your home?

10 wireless that need to be policed.

Total internet devises... 16 wireless and 3 hardwired.

Perhaps its time for a newer model router?

I haven't had a chance to ask yet...been busy with holidays and not much resources at D-Link either. I presume by the first of the year everyone will be back.

I've asked for some information on this. I'll post if I get anything.
Please be patient.

You may want to phone contact D-link sales or support and ask them what model router would handle your access control needs...

FYI, new routers are forth coming. Not sure if any of them will have the features you are looking for.  ::)

The DGL-5500 has the ability to include a combination of IP and MAC addresses in the same rule... so that may help. There maybe other model routers. Still waiting on more info.

If you phone contact D-Link, please let us know what they say.  ;)
