DIR655 usb option missing
« on: January 01, 2015, 06:04:24 PM »

I have a DIR-655 router, version c1 that I just got as a gift. (I helped my parents pick out a 655 a couple years ago, and they have had no issue with it.) I am in NY, USA.
I wanted to use the usb port to link my printer, and use as a network printer. But, I cannot link up to it, the router fails to even see the printer. Checking through the set-up, where the USB option was, it says "media server". Does this mean I cannot connect a printer, without it being a wireless connected through the wps function? Heck, the box even says I can use the usb port for a printer. Or, does it support only limited models, like my previous Asus PoS router (they advertised it as printer-sharing also.) I just updated to the "latest and greatest" firmware, and still no joy in Mudville.

Link>Welcome!

Are you using SharePort to access the printer from the connected PC?
What version of SharePort is being used?

Not using shareport, no idea what that is. The router didn't come with any kind of disk with utilities, manuals or anything, was surprised by that actually. I had to do a google search for a manual just to try to come up with any idea of what is going on. The printer, when connected through the usb, doesn't even show up on the status page on the router info, like everything I have seen says it should.
And D-link's website isn't much help at all for this. None of the links in the FAQ's  seem to work for me, and I couldn't seem to find a way to contact support (beyond that charge you $30+ for tech calls). I don't understand why I should have to pay for support on a product I just bought.

Please try this:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?board=252.0

This is how you access the printer when connected to the USB port.

I upgraded my 655 Rev C yesterday and connected my printer to the USB port and was able to see the printer using SharePort. Router is currently online as well.

So, any computer on the network would need to have this installed to be able to print? That seems like a loopy work-around. But thanks, I'll give it a try.

Yes, each client will need this SW installed to connect to the printer.

It's not a work around. It's how D-Link makes use of the USB port for printers since the USB port is not a actual print server. SharePort works for this configuration.

Will the version of windows affect shareport connection? I have win8.1, and it seemed to install fine, but it won't connect to the printer. It sees it, but when I try to connect it just sits for awhile, then briefly connects, then promptly drops and goes back to "connecting". I am assuming that is why it can never finish finding the device driver, either. Yes, this printer has been connected to, and working just fine on this computer for ages now.

v4.30 supports Windows 8.1 and should work with it. I haven't tested Windows 8.1 yet. Only 7 and Mac OSX.

Be sure to disable any 3rd party security SW and ensure that you allow the SP software to install. Disable User Access Control temporarily. If the printer drivers are previously installed on the PC then SP should pick them up automatically and it should connect to the printer. Test SP on a different PC, Windows 7 if available.

When shareport installed, I allowed it to bypass the firewall and such. I do not have a computer with older software than 8.1 these days, my win7 laptop was fried by my daughter a year ago. And the comp I have been testing from is hard-wired to the router, so it isn't an issue of the wireless causing issue, either.
Oh well, thanks for the help, I'll just have to stick to using the printer hard-wired from the one computer I guess.

If your one computer is ON all the time, you could share it out. Or get you one of these:

I'll fire up my Windows 8.1 PC and test mine out.

Just FYI, I got on my Windows 8.1 PC and installed v4.30 SharePort on to this PC. SP saw the printer and proceeded to install the printer driver which had never been installed before. It installed. I selected the Connect button on SP and was connected with the printer. I printed a page from the windows print properties page and from a page on the Internet. Both printed correctly. SP is working for me on Windows 8.1.
