Can only access VIA IP
« on: June 26, 2009, 04:39:20 PM »

This a weird problem i got after switching to Windows 7. I am unable to access either of my DNS-323 by their share name \\storage and \\storage2, if i use the static ip's i set up for them though it works perfectly fine. This is also preventing the 2 DNS-323 from showing up in the Network on Windows 7.

Are you on the same work group or domain as the DNS?

I use a Linksys WRT54GL router, with Tomatos Firmware on IT. I set manualy the IP on the Router, and define the name of the NAS there (actually, named DLINKNAS).

Under Windows XP, Vista and my iTouch, i can access the NAS with the Name (we call that the DNS name).

When the query are send, like http:\\dlinknas   or \\dlinknas (to access the file system), the router redirect you to the IP of the NAS, like all normal router do.

I'm not sure if all router can define a DNS name on it, but i know this "open source" version can do it.

For name resolution to work properly, you really need to have a name server to handle the resolution tasks.

Windows has traditionally used NetBEUI and NBT (NetBIOS over tcp/ip) to handle it, but at the best of times it is unreliable, and at the worst of times, it does not work at all - perhaps Windows 7 no longer supports the older technology.

If you don't install a DNS or other name resolution server, then you should not expect name resolution to work properly, especially when you add "non-Windows" hosts (the DNS-323 runs linux & SAMBA) in to the mix.
