Hard drive USB standby

Hello,

If I put a USB drive on the DLink USB port, will the USB drive be able to spin down when it is not used?
What speed can I expect?
I have heard something like 1 MB / sec. is it true?
Can I use a USB hub and put a hard drive and the printer?

1. Yes, it will spin down
2. 4 MB/s is max
3. Yes, but use a self powered hub to prevent issues.

Plug the USB HDD into your computer and use an application like HDDScan you can set up power management features there. I don't use Shareport so I don't know if that works directly, but considering it's USB over Ethernet I think doing straight through Shareport might work, too.

Nope, does not work through Shareport (or NDAS etc).

Please excuse my newbee question but how does 4mb speed compare? Is that s fast as if I had to connected to my laptop directly or slower? Thanks

Hello,

Thank you for the tip.

4 MB / sec is really slow (directly connected I have more than 30 MB/sec).
On a good NAS (or a good networkserver)  (raid 0+1), you can do around 100 MB/sec.
I plan to use the HDD for the backups of the network computers (so the speed is not a really big problem with incremental backups)...

I am planning on using it to store all my converted DVDs and play them to my Xbox via the Zune software on my laptop. So any idea how that slow speed might affect my playback. Any suggestions on an alternative way to connect the USB drive so that my entire network could see it?

Depends on the bitspeed required for those DVD files. If they require > 4 MB (HD needs about 6 MB I guess) you're out of luck. Streaming DVD 's through ethernet will be possible only with full N speed, but the router USb connection will be the showstopper.
