Can firmware be updated without HD present?
« on: July 03, 2009, 09:57:31 AM »

I was wondering if the DNS-323 firmware can be updated without having any hard drives present in the bays?
I have a lot of data on the drives and don't want to risk loosing it with a firmware update to the device.

It depends on the firmware version you're upgrading from - the early ones didn't allow any operation without a hard drive.

Having said that - you need to bear in mind that simply removing the disks and powering the unit up without them can place your data in jeopardy, depending on the configuration the disks are in - back up the data before doing anything.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.
