I own a Dir655 and dir815 both suffer the same issues discussed here. Its worth noting I also have a linksys wnr-2000v2 that does not suffer these issues, I gather from that this issue is not caused by my ISP's modem.
my network layout is as follows.
Cable modem ---> router (dir815 or 655) -----> 24 port web smart switch -----> 8 port switch (x3) -----> each 8 port switch has 3 to 5 computers and 1 cisco wireless range extender. wireless clients range from phones, games to laptops. The reason i keep the 24 port switch in the mix is so that when the router crashes the local network will stay up, and the routers crash every 5 to 30 minutes. I'd really like to be able to use these pricey things and the shareport USB is great. but since there is no custom firmware support for them and i can't get them to stop crashing i'm forced to use what doesn't. none of the fixes suggested in this topic thus far have corrected the issue with either one.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • By-pass the main host router and check internet connection by connecting a wired LAN PC directly to the ISP modem to verify connection access and ISP speeds.
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Ensure that different SSID names are used between each WiFi 2.4/5Ghz radios. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighbouring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many? Use v3, its free.
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

I also have the 655 and 815. None have expressed these conditions.

how many times have you copy and pasted that reply? this is the support I'm coming to expect from dlink. suggestion next time you design the best piece of hardware in its class (on paper) consider using linux supported hardware so custom firmwares can be made if you do not intend to make proper firmwares yourselves. I'll keep hacking away at this and post any fixes I stumble across for the hordes of other users suffering the same crap support.

Your the only one thats seems to be the one having issue with your routers Sir. We don't see "hordes" of other users with problems regarding what you inaccurately claim to be a design problem with D-Link routers. Many issues seen here in the forums are a configuration or environment problem which most of the time can be resolved with help and information given by my "copy and paste" information. It's helped the "hordes" of users with problems with there routers. We are here in the forums to help users with there problems and questions and to troubleshoot problems as far as we can to either resolve the problem, then if we can't, then refer users to official phone support with D-Link directly to continue to resolve the issue if the problem is beyond forum help. It's seem which this maybe the case in your situation since you seem unwilling to let us help you out nor give feedback to the questions presented.

We are volunteer help for DLink and here to help out with set up and problems that are posted by users here in the forums. If we can not resolve those issues here or if there are problems with anything beyond our capabilities here in the forums, we ask the users please contact phone D-Link directly for continued help and information. Problems with HW/FW and documentation fall under this reasoning as we do not have the ability to effect any changes. As for D-Link support, if they don't know what customers needs as desires are then it's kind of hard for them to make improvements to there products with out someone helping them out and telling them.  Yes, of course please feel free to post and talk about it here, however there is little or no review by any official D-Link support or engineering personnel here in the forums. It's the users responsibility to help notify D-Link support of un-resolved problems and concerns they have, that we can't fix here in the forums.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.

This thread is now closed. If you want to continue to let us help you in a more professional manor, then we an do that as well.

Good Luck.
