Mapped drives suddenly not connecting`
« on: May 10, 2015, 01:47:52 AM »

Hi

I've got a D-Link DNS320 - which I've had for a few years - with no problems at all. Connecting using Windows 8.1

Suddenly, I cannot access it via the mapped drives - using it's device name 'mediaserver'.  I can access it via a mapped drive using its IP address, but this isn't ideal as the address will change occasionally.

Anyone any idea as to what might have changed?  As I say, it's worked fine for years!

Thanks

Has windows had an update that may have changed some settings to external devices?  This is the most likely reason since you can still connect using IP address.

BTW, if you give the DNS-320 a fixed IP address outside the DHCP range of your DHCP server (router) you will always be able to map the unit without problems.

Hi
Thanks for that - it seemed to have been a DNS issue.  Why it suddenly occurred - I've no idea.  It had DNS-320 mapped to the IP address, and not the proper server name which is mediaserver.

It was only affecting my laptop - so a flush out of everything seems to have sorted it.

I did not want to start a new thread regarding the same or very similar issue.

I have been working great since I purchased this last year, but it lost connection after Comcast replaced my router with ta newer router.
I reset the unit back to factory and then gave the unit a static ip.
It still would not map for a while.
Then after deleting the windows credentials and starting over, it seemed to work for a day, then after I powered the pc back up then next day it lost connection again.

It seems like a DNS issue, but the NAS already has the correct DNS, and all network settings are correct.

I have been looking over the forum and other places to try to see if its a firmware issue or not, but when going out to find the newest firmware, I compared and mine as the most current one.

I am on Windows 7 Professional x32.

I am stumped at the moment.   ???

@1funryd,
You say this only happened when you got a new router otherwise it was working without problems.

The first thing you need to check is that the new router is supplying IP addresses on the same subnet as the old one (example - 192.168.0.xxx for the old one and 192.168.1.xxx for the new one). If it is NOT giving the same subnet as the old one and you have the NAS on a fixed IP of the old one then there is no way that that SAMBA will get any sort of connection let alone a reliable one.

If the subnet is the same then check the cables to the router, they may not be firmly seated in place.  If you are sure they are seated correctly and you have spare ports then try another port - the router may be faulty, ISPs are not noted for using quality equipment.

As a last resort, borrow a gigabit switch and plug the NAS and your computer into it with another cable going to the router to give DHCP addresses and access to the internet.  If that works then again either keep that setup or change the router because it is faulty.

I have a very simular issue so figured I would post here and not create a new thread.

I have a DNS320 and it has been working great for years, a couple of days ago the mapped dives on my main system just stopped working, I can even access it using the IP (static) in Explorer. If I open a web browser and type in the IP I can access the webUI with no issues.

I have another Win 8.1 system and it has had no issues (it's my HTPC) and my partners MacBook accesses it fine also.

So it seems like something with my main system (Win 8.1) but nothing seems to have installed.

I tried resetting the DNS320 but that made no difference, does any one have any ideas on what could be causing the issue?

The fact that there is no problem with other computers indicates it is NOT a DNS-320 problem but a windows one.

Since we do not use windows I can't be specific but I would suggest you check the automatic update log on the problem machine to find out when, and what, the last update did (I have heard of problems with some machines and the win 10 download manager that MS is dumping on all win7 and up machines).
