Network Error
« on: August 10, 2015, 07:15:44 AM »

Lately on my 325 I have been receiving "network error" when watching movies on my LG Bluray player. Last night 3 devices, two LG Blurays and a computer were all watching movies and all got the dreaded network error. My network is all hardwired for these devices. I even replaced the hard drives with ones on the list. My 325 stores my movie collection on two volumes which I run as "Standard". I do a weekly smart test that always passes. Everyone has access to everything. I have not set up any users. The only thing I notice is that the network error seems to intensify as I add movie files to my 325. I am not lacking for space as both hard drives have 43% availability. I really don't know what to do. Help would be appreciated. Thanks. Anthony

What Mfr and model is the main host router?

  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

I recommend using a external Gb network switch between the main host router and the DNS. Use CAT 6 LAN cabling throughout.

FuzyNutz
I have an ASUS RTAC68U router and in front of that a D-Link DGS1016D, 16 port switch. Only my switch is plugged into my router. I am running Cat5 throughout the house. This error has been around for a while. I only get this error when watching movies, not during file transfer. I had originally thought the error was in my Bluray player but if I play movies from my hard drive on my computer, that is make my hard drive available to the network and still use the Bluray player, I don't get the network error.

To confirm, the external switch between the router and DNS? You say that the switch is in front of the router which would not be recommended. Behind the router is preferred.

If this is a Gb networking environment, I would recommend CAT6. CAT5 doesn't really meet GB networking standards and could be causing problems.
One test to try would be to directly LAN wired the DNS to the main host router with a wired LAN PC as well. Test to see if the problem continues...

FurryNutz (I misspelled it the first time)

Your are correct, my switch is behind the router as is all of my other devices including the DNS behind the switch. I am in the process of reserving IP addresses on the router and setting static IP addresses on my bluray players and my DNS to match the reserved list. I may have had a conflict with one of my wireless printers. Am checking that out now.

It's recommended to reserve IP addresses for devices that need router management, PCs, Laptops and game consoles. Items like NAS, Printers, Cameras, sensors and controllers, Set a Static IP address OUT side of the main routers DHCP IP address pool(192.168.0.100 thru .199). Not with in and don't set a reservation on the router for the same address. Just set a Static address ON the device only.
I tend to use the model # of the device as the last IP address #: 192.168.0.32 or .25 for the DNS-325.

FurryNutz

I had an IP conflict, two devices with the same static address.

I did not realize that the addresses outside the DHCP pool can be used with a static IP set on the device. Learn something new.

Thanks, Anthony

Glad you found the problem. Yes, use the IPs out side of the main pool as needed.

Enjoy.  ;)
