Simple network backups

Hi first post,  although I have been hanging around for a while....

OK I am trying to back up some folders on my PC or Phone ,  I don't think this is beyond the 323,s capabilities

Thing is I'm at a loss as to the syntax needed in the backup portion of the standard software (1.10),  my tests all fail.  The manuals no help ,  I know she's an old girl but this should be easy,  my PC can see the NAS and I copy data all the time but would love to automate this,  particularly  the phone pictures etc.

Thanks for the reply buddy,  I really don't have the skills  (I flashed Alt F and took it off ****to),  for you hobbyist Unix / Linux programmers its all easy but I am lost ha ha

In the standard software that is provided i.e the OEM firmware Am I to assume I must first share the folder locally on the PC,  then map the share on the NAS..

Hmmmm not 100% sure I can do this on a HTC phone ....  OK I will have another go and try it on a networked PC....

Am I over simplifying this as the device is getting long in the tooth but the way I see it the phone is just a PC with an file structure and files ?  Looking at the blurb on the 320L this device does exactly what I want

I can't help with backup of your phone unless there's a utility/app with backup options

BUT with a windows OS the easiest option is to use the Windows Backup utility (or another software) and just select the 323 as the location to store the backup.

ps   From what I can research/understand the DNS 323 only supports "Online Backup - I may be wrong but that's what I've just read.  And Online Backup only allows you to backup folders/filers from your DNS 323 to an online account. 

As I said I might be wrong and your easiest chance to backup from PC to DNS 323 would be to use Windows Backup or another software (plenty of free options available) to Backup selected folders/files to destination (DNS 323 folder)  of course your PC and DNS 323 will need to be on to perform such task anyway.

There are simple ways of doing what you want.

Assuming windows on your PC then get a copy of FileZilla client (a FTP client), install it.  Make sure that the FTP server is running on your DNS-323 and make a note of its IP address.  Then all you need to do is put the IP address, name and password into FileZilla, it will connect and show you the directory structure of the 323 in the right hand panel and that of your local hard disk in the left panel.  Select what you want to backup from the local drive, right click on it and select upload - the files and/or directories are uploaded to the NAS.

If your phone is Android based you will find that from version 4 you can't use the backup app to backup to anything other than a cloud provider.  All is not lost, just download AndFTP from the store and install it.  You can then use it just like FileZilla to transfer whatever you want to your NAS.

If your phone is an iphone then you are on your own but I assume there is an FTP client for iOS.

We use FTP for backups from our workstations to several DNS-323 boxes every night using a cron script on them but I don't think you need to get into that at the moment.
