DNS-323: the best firmware
« on: August 29, 2009, 05:30:29 PM »

Dear friends - DNS-323 users - I found the ONLY way to solve all the problems & wishes regarding this NAS device is to buy/use some other producer's NAS. The DNS-323 is simple a toy for home "gaming" and is absolute not to be used in any serious matter.
Folders security/share rules ... total c_r_a_p !!
Users, groups ... god save me from such a simplicity.
Firmware bugs ... if I've got a nickle for each one...
Just for example, take a look to Buffalo products (low cost Link Station, not to mention the higher/better models) and you'll see entirely new word. And best of all, my almost 3 years old Link Station Pro II works fine as the first day (with over 30 users, where several users are members of 3-4 groups + their own single user's rights). And this is not all - the same logic is dealing with folders (& subfolders).
Miracle ??  NO - just well done firmware. And as I know, this is not something extraordinary. It is just a normal thing, something a common NAS user is expecting to get.
At the end - support  :-\  Yes, a member of US support team tried to help me and he really tried very hard. But, how can any support effort be efficient if there is no solution ?!? And support from my nearest provider (Italy) - after 4 days they told me just "No way & look at the manual" and that's it (like I can't read or I'm too stupid to understand pictures with a few words in manual - for such a complex & full optional device); Great Britany - even less (or better - nothing).
Well, in short, I decided to throw away this useless piece of whatever.

Don't throw it away, I'll take it off your hands to recycle it.

I am heading towards that road too, but I want to give 1.08 a try, although it's been taking forever to release. If 1.08 isn't properly QA'd and is buggy then I will check out the Buffalo as you mentioned.

If final release 1.08 remains like 1.08 beta5 shows at the moment then nothing really changes for me. It seems bittorrent bug is fixed, but BT has no importance for me. As I need stable & secure FTP I'm so hard about DNS-323. It is really pity DNS-323 doesn't give what it could. D-Link guys has good ideas but for my money I do want good working and usefull device, not just ideas. Therefore I found Buffalo much better - it works as NAS device should, FTP is as it has to be and that's it. And most of all - it is stable as too with large & proper users/groups/folders possibilities.

hey Krok

check out QNAP and Synology as well, they are both very good products, i am just about to order a QNAP, not that much more money then the D-Link for a lot more and stable features as you had mentioned.  I have been waiting for the backup solution to work and a network recycle bin for a while and it doesn't seem like D-Link is ever going to implement it or get it working properly ... For the most part i am happy with the 323 but it isn't stable enough yet and the lack of support via firmware's isn't up to par ...
