Ok,  this sort of thing should be so simple but for whatever reason there is no network browser to allow pinkies like me to simply browse a local network
that has devices attached so that we can  click on the appropriate file or folder and use the resultant string as the file path for the URL.

I cannot be the only non expert or am  ?

Could some kind person please fill in the gaps for me,  I have a PC with lets say ip 192.168.1.66 on network domain called Bobby.   I want to backup the folder on the only disk  and the folder is c:\pictures

So should be simple :  What's the source path of the URL  that I enter into the URL box in the local backup section on the NAS

It's OK some of us have been where you are now - don't be afraid to ask

Lets start with the basics - here's hoping you have windows OS - have you mapped the network drive?  There is a disk that if I remember helps you to map the drive.

Once you've done that...the easiest option is to use Windows Backup or another software to "action" your backup.  To get the folder address (once you've mapped the drive and created your backup folder) is to open Windows Explorer and browse to the folder - once there in the address bar it should read something like Computer / Drive letter / Folder Name if you right click this and select "edit address or "copy address as text" you will get the location needed for your backup software.

I have a windows O/S on my PC,  I have mapped a network drive on the PC for my 320L  using the map network location app in windows 8.2,  the physical address mapped looks like this when I click the link (I get an error because I am at work just now)  \\192.168.?.??\Volume_1  for the Root

If I browse a local folder on my PC now for example '' how exactly would I express this in the backup location sting of data  on the 320L for LAN backup  'of the Odd Pictures Folder' ? 

The PC has a name on my network lets call its name ERIC,  so would the address be" \\Eric\C:\Users\my_userid\Pictures\Pictures Year 2001\Odd Pictures"

All I want to do is backup on a schedule the contents of a location,  the NAS can do this without me having to faff around once its set-up to do it,  I know I could just copy / paste but that 100% rely's on life not getting in the way.

Ideally and I cannot see how this could not be done I could backup the pictures on my telephone (Android) in exactly the same way,  the phone has an IP a network connection folders etc..

Am I trying to Paint the moon here,  the device was £40 so I am making some allowances for the poor web app etc.  but reading the tech talk on this device its not so bad for the money,  trying to figure out what should be soooooo easy is the frustrating bit

No beer necessary   the last glass of shandy that touched my lips was mid July (my neighbours 70th) before that it was maybe New Year 2011 - I'm not a drinker but I appreciate the offer 

Lets try to take this step by step and see where it takes us... I don't backup separate folders etc on routine/automated.  All I've done is from a fresh install of Win OS I grabbed the whole disk and copied to a folder on the 320L.  I store all my media on the 320L with important stuff like photos backed up to online storage that way if my hard drive dies I can still get the important/special stuff back.

So I need to learn to automate backup to help you.  What backup software will you be using? If you are going to use the D Link system remember you have to have the pc or other device switched on anyway so a Windows based backup will run and upload to 320L where as a D Link backup you'll have to ensure the device is on at the time to run the backup.

OK lets try this but you need to find the IP address of your PC (not from internet provider)  will be 192.168.0.? or similar and the only way I worked out how to find it.. I have an android mobile and ES File Explorer installed and via LAN connections it shows 2 IP address (network shares) my PC and my 320L - if you can get that fixed/found...

Then read this  http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/support/faq/network-storage-and-backup/nas/dns-series/dns-320l/uk_dns-320l_setup_a_local_backup_by_lan 

Note the URL should read  \\IP of PC\then the rest of the address as per what you see if Windows Explorer address bar "edit address" replacing C:\ with \\IP of PC\  = make sure the slashes are the right way  \\

I've just tested (as per the link above) and I get successful

Just re read your last - you tried "This string does not work \\local PC IP\Users\myuser\Pictures" but did you test via anonymous?

When I boot to desktop I have User ID and Password before full access given therefore to use Local Backup I must enter those credentials

Ok thank you so much for the reply,  I used my login credentials for the pc so that the authority could be confirmed.  I should say I have not set any users as I have shared th disks to everybody in an attempt to just get it to work,  so if your string works locally for you then your syntax I should be able to duplicate using my folder structures.

If I have no joy it must be down to authorities or my firewall / router.

I will say I set up the upnp to yes and all my devces saw the NAS instantly

I use the Android file manager right now as it's very easy to use and has a super scan function.

Sadly I am away until Thursday evening so won't be able to test the link,  one things for sure I will write an idiot's guide to help others  if I am able to get it sorted.

If you can see and access folders/files it shouldn't be firewall issue - when you boot windows I'm asssuming the user id is "myuser" and you enter a password to get to desktop?

I'm here most days but not always monitoring the board - pm me or just reply when you need more help.  Also look at TeamViewer and if you don't know it learn about it - if you need on hand help I use TeamViewer with friends/family to assist/fix their issues.

seems OK but it took me a few attempts to get it understood/working.  I'm no geek, I'm no techy but I do like to help - as I tried to explain I've never used the backup  BUT I understand that sometimes these instructions (or lack of) create extra stress because they are generally written by geeky/techy people who know what they are doing.

Just update the thread and/or pm me when you are ready.
