How to re-format only one drive?
« on: December 17, 2015, 08:48:26 AM »

Hello
in my DNS-325 Nas I have 2 hard drives (standard, no RAID). I need to re-format only one. How to?

May I suggest you dig out the unit manual and read the section under Web UI --> Management --> Disk Management --> Hard Disk Configuration Wizard (page 38 in the manual we have).  There you will find the procedure - critical step is Step 3 where you must be careful to select the correct drive to format.

NOTE: This is only safe if you do in fact have your disks setup as Standard (Individual stand alone disks) and NOT JBOD where if you format one disk you lose every bit of your data.

May I also recommend that you backup any data you don't want to lose from both disks.

I solved removing the second drive, than formatting the first. Finally I returned the second.
Thanks

Doing it that way and depending on which volume you replaced you could end up with both drives labelled Volume_1 which can mess up mapping on your PC.

The removed drive was labeled Volume 2 yet. It works  ;)

You were very lucky in that you formatted Volume_1 (a single drive when formatted is always given the label Volume_1) rather than Volume_2 so everything continues to work as normal.  There have been other that have ended up with both drives with the Volume_1 label which has caused no end of problems.

If I exchanged the two dirves, with no reformat, what will happen ? Will the labels exchanged too ?

First answer, since your drives are formatted as standard nothing will happen other than you having a problem if you have mapped a specific drive to a drive letter.
Second answer,  The volume labels are supplied by the format program and just changing the drive position will not change that unless you reformat the drive in the new position.
