All,

DNS-320 S/N PVPO1B7001166 shipped Thursday night and was delivered @ 12:00 noon on Friday 2 Sept. 2011 by UPS. H/W Ver. A1 F/W Ver. 2.00. I COULD NOT GET IT TO TURN ON.

On arrival, I plugged the power supply into the DNS-320, the power cord into the power supply and then the wall socket. I opened the front door on the DNS-320 and pushed the power button.

. . .

To bad D-Link wants them back, I'd have a cute little doorstop for each bedroom.

Unbelievable. You have enough DNS-320s to open a spare parts store.
What's your next step?

Airprox,

I am glad that you said something "that is probably stating the obvious" & yes it sounds really patronizing. If it wasn't intended that way, it should have been. Now I am really embarrassed! (but I have a power light and two blue hard drive lights.)

I was so careful not to remove the clear plastic preventing the black plastic case from getting scratched, until I tested the new units, that I couldn't see the "real" power button. I'd blame it on a senior moment, but my wife is a lot younger than me and she couldn't see the button either. Probably one of the dumbest things I've done in years. Head-Up-In-Lock? I think I owe D-Link an apology and shipping on three perfectly good units that I took back.

Fortunately, with help from the forum, I was able to recover all 815 GB of data I had stored on the RAID.
When I logged in, I was presented with the following message:
"Warning: The device with Raid 1 is degraded now. Please remember to rebuild the Raid 1 for data integrity."

I selected to perform a manual rebuild and was taken to a screen that says "HDD Data Is Syncing Now". It’s been "syncing" for about 20 min. and still shows 0% so I'll report back if my RAID 1 data surrived or if I will need to copy it all back.

Either way, thank you for stating the obvious!

Pete,  So glad you've got it sorted.  As a new guy on the forum I hummed and harred about whether I should pitch in as you're never quite sure how pointing something like that out will be taken.  I have to admit, when I first got the unit, I didn't read the manual and did exactly as you did... left plastic on, opened the flap and pressed the button... nada.  Quick look in the maunual and had an "ohh" moment.  Live and learn.

Cheers
Al

When you removed the two HDDs from your original DNS-320, did you label the slots where each HDD was originally located (i.e. left vs. right)? The HDD location makes a difference to the DNS-320. Placing the two HDDs in the wrong slot could cause issues during mounting (such as the one you're describing).

If the unit hangs and can't complete rebuilding, you'll have to recreate the RAID array from scratch, which shouldn't be an issue since you have your backup.

Airprox,

When I received my first DNS-320, I removed the clear plastic and obviously saw the power switch on the front. It setup flawlessly and worked for two months. All of my computers were configured to mount it at boot so it was just sort of “out-of-sight, out-of-mind” down in my home office. When it failed I called D-Link Tech Support and they walked me through trouble shooting it. (They have since verified that it had in-fact failed). When the replacement arrived and I couldn’t see any other switch, I “just knew” the USB copy button was it. I’ve mentored a lot of young engineers, so I know from experience; once you get an erroneous idea like that engrained it is almost impossible to get back on track without help. You provided exactly the help I needed, so again, thank you.

JavaLawyer,

Yes, as I said in an earlier post, I labeled each drive so it could be installed back into its original slot. They were installed correctly when I got the message in my last post.

The good news is that the RAID rebuild completed over night and all my data looks to be intact and accessible.

Obviously, since it is a new unit set to factory defaults, I had to reallocate the UPnP AV Server shares, and reconfigure the other settings I changed. As before, it streams video to my Samsung TV correctly, but won’t handle music or photos. I have an Asus RT-N16 router running Tomato USB that does the music & pictures correctly (as well as video) so I can use it until (and if) D-Link fixes their server. I also mentioned in an earlier post that TWONKY media server running on the DNS-320 and minidlna both were capable of streaming all three types of files stored on the DNS-320 to the TV so I think the problem is with the D-Link UPnP AV Server implementation.

Again, thanks to everyone who tried to help, especially t121anf for making us aware of a data recovery program that works with the DNS-320 RAID drives and Airprox for “stating the obvious”.

Going forward I recommend that you save a copy of the DNS-320 "Configuration Settings" file to your local PC so you can quickly restore all your custom configurations in the event of another failure or factory reset.

Amazing, I'm just reading this thread and that's what I thought at first : "Couldn't it be that this guy is pressing the USB transfer button ? Nah... that's too obvious, and D-Link tech support surely must have asked him about that...".

Great story anyway, teaches us that no one is safe from missing the obvious thing. And that D-Link tech support is very patient...

Ext2Read and R-Studio are two applications a number of DNS owners have successfully used to recover (or simply access) their DNS data. DNS users have had a greater measure of success with R-Studio for mounting and reading more complex RAID arrays and JBOD.

Glad you managed to recover everything.

Friends.
It really does not work to mount the disks on a PC with a Linux distribution to recover the data?

Only through software such as Ext2Read be able to read?

Why(because) this limitation?

Excuse my bad English

Thanks.

Hello friends
I bought a DNS 320 A1 1.00 firmware made in China.

I installed two 80 GB HDDs in RAID1 mode.
I copied two files 200 Mbs to the RAID1 partition.

I am now trying to simulate a problem with the DNS 320.

I removed one of the disks and will use an adapter ( http://produto.mercadolivre.com.br/MLB-426830655-cabo-adaptador-conversor-usb-20-p-ide-sata-fonte-3-em-1-_JM ) To connect to my PC ..

By putting on a Windows XP or Windows 7 using the software arise Ext2IFS 4 partitions on my computer.
A small partition contains only folders called "AjaXplorer" and "ftp".
In the other three partitions when attempting to access these message appears
"The disk in drive X is not formatted. Would you like to format it now?"
Here is a picture of what I described above (http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/5096/recovera.jpg)

By putting on a notebook with Linux only partition with folders called "AjaXplorer" and "ftp" appears.

thank you very much

Hello friends,

I managed to retrieve the data and successfully access the partitions on my simulation using R-Studio, but with the FREE version could not.

If anyone knows why my tests with Ext2IFS not work please manifest.

I have preference for FREE programs.

Thanks

hi.

can anyone confirm if i transfer the HDDs from one DNS-320L to another would the new DNS-320L detect and mount the volumes even if its RAID 0 or RAID 1?

my DNS-320L doesn't power on anymore so DLink sent me another unit but it could not mount the volumes.

Thanks.

They may or may not, it depends on firmware version and hardware version.

That being said, it is always a good idea to reformat old drives in a new unit and then restore the data from the backup - you do have a current backup of you data don't you.

We have done that in the past in an emergency for a client (DNS-320 same hardware batch and firmware) but some time later the drives were reformatted and restored.
