JBOD, no volume but I can access as media centre
« on: January 22, 2016, 03:33:41 PM »

Hi,

First of all let me say hello to all Dlink Staff and dns 320 owners.

I own two dns 320. I moved to another house and one of my hatdisks on the NAS loose connection. I got an error on startup and then when I plug it again I can access the NAS as a media server but can't read the files. The web gui says there is no volume but I can see both disks. SMART test says both units are ok.

Is there a way to reconstruct the JBOD configuration so I can access the files? How can I mount a JBOD disk on Windows or Linux? This is the last time I will configure my NAS as JBOD!

I have seen that there is a sticky post regarding data recovery but it seems the structure is there because I can see the contents accessing as a media server and the SMART test is passed.

Thanks in advance

A few things.
SMART tests only confirm things about the physical drive but nothing about the file system there.

If your JBOD was assembled as one volume (Volume_1) then by starting the unit with one drive missing (not connected, or lose) you have forced overwriting of the directory structure information.  This is why you can't see anything directly, it is also where you get out the backup you made before moving, reformat both drives and restore.  No backup then you MIGHT be able to recover your data but equally you might not.

Read the sticky on data recovery (be aware that your disks are formatted with the Linux Ext2/3/4 file system and can not be manipulated directly by a windows computer).  I would suggest that you go to the R-Studio site and download their user manual, it will tell you more about data recovery than you want to know but it will also give some idea about what is involved

(we are nor endorsing R-Studio in any way, we have not used their program because we don't use the windows operating system, but they do have a very good manual)

Many thanks for the help. I will never use JBOD again. That's for sure.
