Hello,

I have my 320L set up with a static IP. But then I tried to connect it through a friends router with another network id (x.x.178.x istead of x.x.0.x). So I thought about setting it up to use DHCP.
But then again, if I connect it directly to my desktop, there will be no DHCP available. So what IP would my 320L take? Is there a standard IP address for such cases?

A couple of questions.

1) assuming your computer can connect to the internet where does it get its IP address from (it would usually be from your router DHCP server)?
2) has your friend set the DHCP range of his router to use the xxx.xxx.178.xxx subnet?

With answers to those questions we might be able to be of more help.

Thanks for your reply, but I don't think you realy got my problem. I read my post again and see where I was to vague. But first let me answer your questions:

1) The local IP of my computer is set by me and is static. There is a DHCP service running on my router, but that is just in case some guests want to use my network. The public IP is set by my internet provider.

2) The subnet x.x.178.x is the standard setup of my friends router manufactor. At my place I use x.x.0.x. So I set up my 320L with an IP in that subnet, where I can easily connect my 320L directly to my computer (static IP adress, no DHCP available).

Back to my problem: I have no problem with my device. I can connect to it just fine. I also know what to do if the subnet is different.

My question is, what IP address will my 320L take, if there is no DHCP available and it is configured to get the IP from a DHCP service?
I want to know this before setting up my 320L to use DHCP instead of a static IP. So in case I connect it to a network without a DHCP service, I know what IP I have to connect to.

In other words what is the default IP address.  The problem is that I don't think there is one.  Unlike the non L version which is 192.168.0.32 the manual for the L states something about 169.254.xxx.xxx as being the default (this is a windows APIPA address, which I understand only works with windows and is a holding address before ate DHCP server assigns one from the DHCP range).  Unfortunately we don't have a L unit here that we can use to test this (also we don't use windows) so, unless someone else has more information, it is up to you to try and find out, sorry.

I don't have any specific information on the 320L, however any 169.###.. address is self assigned address for most devices that when if a DHCP service is not present, and if the FW supports it, it will automatically self assign a 169 address so that a direct connection with a PC using the same IP address string, 169, can gain access to the device. Where the 320L supports this, I don't know. One should phone contact there regional D-Link support office and inquire with in about this. Best method would be to connect the DNS to a DHCP service temporarily and configure the DNS for a static IP address.

Ok, I did the work I wanted to avoid : )
The IP my device had without a DHCP service available was 169.254.195.123. So FurryNutz was right.
Would be nice if one could set this kind of IP himself. Is it hardcoded in the NIC chip? Or is it set by the used OS?

The 169 IP address range is reserved for just this, auto self IP generation and should not be really used by users or set up as a static IP address for daily use. I believe this is general standard spec coding for any network device which should follow the standard network specs. Its just a last ditch method and use for gaining access to devices until normal IP addressing can be setup and configured on devices.
