DIR-825 - Can't Install Shareport
« on: January 04, 2010, 09:02:47 PM »

I have Win XP Pro, SP3, hard wired to the 825 rev B router through a  short CAT-5 cable and RJ-45 connectors. I have been unsuccessful in getting the Shareport software to install. I have a 3COM 10/100 Ethernet card on my computer.

I tried to install the Shareport S/W from the CD that came with the 825 router. The CD light goes on for many seconds, and then my hard disk drive light blinks away furiously for a while (30 secs - 1 min?), and then slowly calms back down to the odd blink every few seconds or so. At no time does an installation panel ever come up to allow me to select something to do (like install the S/W).

I downloaded the 2.02 beta 01 firmware to try it, with no difference in behavior. Tonight I tried to install it while I  was logged onto the router. Same thing - nothing installed - only blinking disk lights.

I downloaded the Shareport ver 1.10 S/W, and tried  to install it, with no luck. I have read about higher versions of Shareport, but have not found anywhere to load these from. Maybe they won't work at all?

Any ideas on how I can get the Shareport S/W installed?

Well, I guess reading enough provides the answer! A post I read suggested that any firewall be turned off before installing Shareport. I did that, and still no install panel. However, the Shareport Installation icon on the taskbar gave the option to move the window. So, I tried to move it, but without seeing it, it didn't move. Then, I realized that it was probably on the other monitor that was turned off (I just recently got an new video card with dual outputs!). So, there was the install panel, on the other screen (who would'a thunk?). The installation went fine after that.

So, I guess the lesson learned was that the (Windows) firewall should be turned off when trying to install Shareport, otherwise it won't install (at least on my Win XP Pro machine!).

An installation note about turning off any firewall to install this program might have led to a much faster resolution of this installation problem! [Did I miss that somewhere?]

However, the Epson CX3810 printer is not working yet. More to read, I guess! As a side note, I plugged my USB memory stick into the Shareport connector, and my computer was able to read it without problem. So, I know that the Shareport is actually working. A good start!

Well, the news keeps on getting better here. Now I have my printer working.

I solved my problem by printing to my local USB port, rather than a network port. I thought that it was necessary to use port IP_192.168.0.1. In desperation, I just selected a local port (USB001), because the Shareport program said that the USB was connected, so I decided that it should be a local port in this case, and not a network port. And so it worked.

Just to recap - I am connected to the USB port on the DIR-825, and NOT a local USB port on my computer. I guess I must have missed the port to use (in the documentation) when connecting to the router through the Shareport software (virtual?) connection.

If I leave the Shareport disconnected from my computer, but have the Auto Connect enabled, then I get a message that the printer is not ready, but then the printer starts up (after Shareport has made the temporary connection, I guess). After the test page finished printing correctly, again the printer said that the printer was not ready. However, the print job was finished printing by then. If I just connect permanently (through the connect button on the Shareport software), then the printer just starts printing normally, just as it would if connected to a local USB port. So, I would say that it is working normally.

Perhaps I'll still see the other problems reported here about what happens after turning the computer on again after it has been off all night. But that is for another day, and I know how to get it going, at least!

So, it all works!
