Factory reset and possible data loss?
« on: September 28, 2016, 11:02:15 PM »

Hello,
I wanted to ask a quick question- I want to factory/hard reset my NAS D-Link 320L, but I was wondering will I lose the data on my HDDs, do I need to pull them out and them back in after reset or? And if so, will the NAS recognize them with the info inside...
Thanks, I did a search and couldn't find what I was looking for.

Still.. I guess i save my config, do a facotry reset via web GUI and then load back config file. Supposedly all the data impact... Right?

Yes, save off the NAS config to file first for backup. Then you can do a factory reset. This only clears the UI configurations that you have done. No data on the drive(s) will be lost.

Thank you very much, unfortunately now I have the blue power led blinking syndrom :( cannot connect to drive at all :(
No idea what to do. Reading the forum, might be a hardware problem, temp sensor failure, etc...
:(
Not good...

Just curious on the reason of doing a factory reset?

Is the NAS connected to the main host router via LAN cable? Look at the main host routers DHCP client table to see if it's listed there and you should see it's IP address.
What MFr and model is the main host router?
Try a different LAN cable between the router and NAS.

The NAS was starting to work slowly, losing connection, unable to copy file when mounted in windows, just browse, etc...today it just stopped, lights still on, but connection timeout. Connected to router via the cable. I wanted to restart it and pressed/held the power button, it started blinking and never got off. After unplugging the power supply and then booting, it again was stuck on the blinking blue light and no connection.
Next step is trying a hard reset and then throwing the NAS unit I guess

Try a different LAN cable between the router and NAS.

Check the power adapter of the NAS, make sure the voltage of the end of the plug is reading values listed on the sticker. Seen some adapters go bad and make it seem like the unit is bad.

Asus RT-N65U
I will check the power supply for correct voltage. Don't think the cables have gone bad, as very little use and no movement.
Thank you again!

When checking the power brick do so with a load on it.  These are switch mode power supplies and as such can show correct voltage when there is no load but when under load the voltage drops because, usually, the capacitors are failing and don't give the required feedback to the switching circuit.

If you can borrow a good power supply that will supply 12v @ 3A you can use that as a test.

Thank you Ivan!
After I cooled the unit at around 5 degrees centigrade for about an hour I managed to boot it up! The trick worked (this time).
I backed up the settings and intend to reset it.

I have another question- WHY is the connection via internet and FTP 2 times fASTER (11 mb/s) than the file transfer via windows explorer on the mounted drive (6 mb/s)? Any idea? Is this some sign the unit is starting to degrade?
Thanks!

The answer to your speed question is not a simple one but it does depend on what version of windows you are using and therefore appears to be dependant on just how MS has implemented the CIFS/SMB stack.  Win10 if by far the worse in this with it being a known fact that some updates have killed the connection to NAS boxes.

Using FTP on a non windows system over the internet you are subject only to limits set by the network, hence a much higher speed.

For those interested http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/09/29/microsoft_warns_windows_security_fix_may_break_network_shares/

I feel sorry for those using win10, first there is the data slurp and now this.

Can users remove or un-install this patch?

Thanks Ivan for posting this. MS sure is making Windows 10 hard to work with.  >:(

I'm still able to access my 345 via map drive on Windows 10.  ::)

Unfortunately we don't have a copy of win10 to work with so I can't say anything about un-installing the patch (I will be honest and say there is no way that we, as a company, would pay for a version of win10 just to run it in a VM).

The fact that you can still access your 345 from win10 just highlights the fact that some things work on some hardware but not on different hardware.  From what we see of walk in customers with problems with win10 there is absolutely no consistency in the OS which does not bode well for the future of Windows.
