Sorry, I should have asked if it was an electrolytic or not. With SMT it may be possible to find where it came from by looking for raised solder in places labelled C <some number>. As an aside I have known of people assembling electronic equipment to drop the odd extra component in the case 'just for fun'.
With the fan, make sure it is clean and turns freely. Set it to 'auto (off, low, high) and, unless the fan is faulty you shouldn't hear it. I am sitting in our office checking that our clients daily backups are downloading without problems. Beside me are 11 NAS boxes that are mirroring the clients NAS, I can just hear the fans if I move behind them, the disks operating make more noise.
There are a few things, which I assume you know, that help keep the units cool.
Don't put them in a small space that restricts natural ventilation, or in fact anywhere that will restrict free air flow.
Don't put them near radiators or other heat sources.
Make sure there is a clear space under the unit and there is at least 15 cm clear at the back to stop the fan having too much pressure to push against.
Don't, unless absolutely necessary, use them in a high dust situation.
