Connection timed out and FTP upload
« on: December 01, 2016, 12:50:23 PM »

Hello,
I have a problem that I cannot find solution so far and I kindly ask for your opinion. Reading the forums didn't help me.
I have the 320-l and Asus router RT-N65U. Here are the setups of both:

I am using ASUS Dynamic Domain Name System.

My problem is when I try to UPLOAD files to the ftp no matter if in same network or outside one, I get timed out connection, get disconnected every 20-30 seconds and cannot upload anything. Attention: I can DOWLOAD with no problems at all. Using FileZilla:
Code: [Select]
Status: Connecting to ****:21...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Status: Logged in
Status: Starting upload of E:\*.rar
Status: Retrieving directory listing of "/Volume_1/"...
Command: TYPE I
Response: 200 TYPE is now 8-bit binary
Command: PASV
Response: 227 Entering Passive Mode (****)
Command: MLSD
Response: 150 Accepted data connection
Response: 226-Options: -a -l
Response: 226 20 matches total
Command: PASV
Response: 227 Entering Passive Mode (****)
Command: REST 85349804
Response: 350 Restarting at 85349804
Command: STOR *.rar
Response: 150 Accepted data connection
Error: Connection timed out after 20 seconds of inactivity
Error: File transfer failed after transferring 16 515 072 bytes in 22 seconds
Status: Disconnected from server
Status: Resolving address of ****.asuscomm.com
Status: Connecting to ****:21...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Status: Logged in
Status: Starting upload of Y:\*.rar

Here are the FZ settings, using Passive mode and Binary file transfer

Any clues why my connection drops for upload and works on downlods? Thanks in advance!

Connection interrupts every 30-120 seconds, resumes file upload several times and then resets and start from the beginning (the upload)

A couple of questions.
1)  do you have a better manual on the router than the one on the Asus web site?  That one is useless for setting up what you want.
2) what are you actually trying to achieve - access to the NAS over the local network or access to the NAS from the internet?

Reading the screen grabs you have posted my first thought is that you have two FTP servers running which will give you the results you are seeing.

In the router setup page note the second bullet point in the description.  You have set port 20 (which gives the virtual FTP server the standard 20/21 pair) so activating the router FTP server.  This is where a better manual with more details about the settings would be invaluable.
On the NAS FTP server page you have enabled the server again with the standard port 20/21 pair even though it only shows port 21.

With those settings you now have a race condition between the two servers and you get breaks in transmission as the servers ping pong - hence my second question of what do you want to do.

Thank you Ivan,
I am trying both on your second point. Result is the same.
Have to check for a written manual.
I also noted second bullet but the ftp has been working with such settings for years... I have only changed the ISP.
What do you suggest? I tried to change the ports but with no luck- it didn't work.

OK let me check a few points.
1)  you have had this hardware doing what you want in the past - the same router and NAS.
2) you changed ISP but apart from changing the ISP info in the router you did not change anything else.

In theory, since you are using the same equipment , router and NAS, that worked before with unchanged settings on both it should still work.

The next thing you should check are what you changed on the internet side of the router when you setup the new ISP settings.  Did you change DNS settings?  Have you changed the DHCP settings?  Does your new ISP block FTP ports?

Changed DNS settings may cause problems with resolving the Asus DDNS.
Changed DHCP will, if your NAS is on fixed IP, change how it is found.  I see that you have set the virtual FTP to 192.168.2.234.  Is that the same subnet you used before you changed ISP provider (the default DHCP for the router is 192.168.1.1 which may be the subnet you started with).

Other than that it will have to wait until Monday when I can talk with my service department people to see if they have any other ideas.

Just a quick update- changed the mask to 1, not 2, still the same issue. Will keep looking for a solution.
Do you think weak battery can lead to this? But it is strange- I can download terrabytes with no issues, when i try to upload, it drops and reconnects several times till it becomes irresponsive at all and needs a restart.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? Link> Speed Testing Sites

- Optic cable to the building, lan cable afterwords
- huawei EC2108V5
- 65 Mbps upload / 50 Mbps download

How can this be connected as it doesn't work from another place also.
Can I switch off one of the ftp services from the NAS or router? Don't know what to try.
Maybe I will try a hard reset as resetting to defaults didn't help.

Those logs don't look correct especially the IP addresses but we can't check because a) we don't have your model router and b) we only use managed switches on our networks.

On that last point could you borrow a network switch (gigabit preferred but a 100 Base-T will do)?  If you can then link Your NAS and computer to the switch and link the switch to your router (the later is to use the DHCP server of the router to give IP address to the computer).

With this setup try uploading to the NAS.  If this works then we know the NAS and computer are setup correctly.  If it doesn't then we need to look at those settings more closely.

I have hidden the IP adress with *
Both PC and NAS are plugged directly into the router.
I will try to put them on a switch and then to the router, thanks for the suggestion

We assumed that but you have too many places for IPv4 (www.xxx.yyy.zzz).  Some of it looks like the short form IPv6, something the NAS knows nothing about.

One more question.  What is the fixed IP address of your NAS if you can't get sustained throughput on upload through the switch? (send me a PM to keep it private)
